my 85 scotsdale 4x4 has a 305. some times it feels like it has power and other times it feels sluggish. it can all happen in the same running. what can cause this? do i need to rebuild my carb? is it something else? it is all stock except the exhaust.

Stay tuned . I'm having mine checked out hopefully today. Mine won't down shift going up a hill unless I put it on the floor and by then its tooo late...305 doesn't have the horses to throw it over a hill when you kick it. Clean you carb , or put Sea Foam ( NAPA has it )in your gas tank...it could be carbon...check timing also...I will let you know what I find....rumor is : have your jets drilled out a 1000th and the truck should scat..

Start by checking the small things: fuel filter, tune-up, etc, before rebuilding the carb. Also, is it sluggish only when the engine is cold, or does it do it even when warmed up?

Well here is the verdict for me...My tranny tossed its cookies on my to turkey hunt thurs. morning..$1450.00 later and I should be back on the road...do like the oter guy said...check the PCValve, fuel filter,
vaccum advance bell on the distributor , clean the carb , check a spark plug and look for carbon build up..
