Ok all of you classic rock fans, time for you to put your music where your muffler is. Or at least for me to do so ;)

In Billy Joel's famous song "I'm moving out" there is a sound clip of a car taking off and the exhaust is just beautiful. It has a perfect rumble-in-the-belly type of deep kinda bubbly sound. I want to have a similar exhaust sound on my truck, but I dont know enough about manipulating exhaust to get the right effect.

Does anyone know what engine was used in this clip and what type of exhaust that would be? I am hoping some of you older guys might have heard a real world example of this.

To me it sounds like a small block Chevy with glass packs and a relatively small exhaust (like a 1.75" or 2"), but it sounds much too muffled to be just glass packs. I figure the length of the exhaust will make a big difference on the sound too.

Any ideas? If anyone needs another listen to the song, I am going to rip part of it off CD and put it up for download (that is legal cuz it's not the whole song).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-04 AT 10:52 PM (CST)]I went and dug out the song and listened to it. it did sound very nice. but i didn't think is sounded like glass packs. sounded kinda like a nice turbo muffler, but i'm not sure. i am by far and exhaust expert. I am looking for a nice exhaust system for my truck. I my self have 2" pipe with 24" glass packs and it sound good but i'm looking for something different, and the car on the song didn't sound like my truck. Anyone ever use the Hooker areo chamber mufflers?

Try some 2' to 2 1/2" exhaust pipes with some Flowmaster series mufflers or any free flowing turbos. The short ones have a better sound, and the long ones are more quiet.

I have 2 1/4" dual exhaust with some good flowing turbo mufflers, but I have a shorty setup (exits right behind the cab). My Dad suggested that if I had some more pipe up front and had the mufflers further back like near the rear end then the sound would probably be better. It doesnt seem to even come close to that burble sound in the song though.

well it might sound better. try going with some 2.5" exhaust. or you could put 2.5 after the muffler and extend it further back than what you have. I think i'm just gonna run headers and striaght pipe out the back.
