After we get our 1966 3/4 ton payed off and brought home,Im thinking about doing some trading with someone on transmissions the 1966 3/4 ton has a 4 speed on the floor granny low also has the low geared rearend in under it. We are looking for good 350 turbo or 400 turbo even a 2 speed powerglide this will be in near future.
If you plan on any highway driving consider a 700R4. It's worth every penny and the rebuilt ones are alot stronger than the old one's. Brian
Consider taking the SM420 to a swap meet, or advertise in the local paper. Those transmissions are considered a prize catch by the off-roading folks. Gotta agree about the 700R4 for normal driving. If you will be towing or hauling maybe the 350 or 400 WOULD be a better selection. DVal
Dont know how expencive the used 700r4 would be,I will look into getting one after I get the SM420 to sale maybe get enough money to buy onther one. Thanks Drabo & Dvalentine for imformation helps to get opion about things sometimes
Drabo Just wondering what your truck looked like I havent seen it. What size of motor do you have in it? Yea I always like looking at 1960 to 1966 chevy trucks.I guess its in my blood for life.
A new one should run between $1K and $2.5K depending on how you get it. From a place like TBI its $1500. A junker that you have rebuilt should be between $800-$1500. I have owned two in my lifetime, both times they burned up due to improper instillation of the TV cable. DON'T become a victim of this. By the way, if the tranny guy ever says, "Well, the TV cable won't be exactly right because of the geometery on your motor," get the hell out of there. It needs to be PERFECT. Now I'm running a turbo 350 behind my 350ci because no one here seemed to have any idea what they were doing (myself included.)
Take a look a Mad Dog Transmissions. They are on the web. I bought mine from there. I bolted it up added fluid and it works like a champ. I think it was about $800 with shipping. Brian
dvalentine needs to seriously be commended for the article. It is the rosetta stone for those of us whose tranny lingo in greek. Thanks, D!
283 Man Hey 283 Man I'll try to get some pic's on my baby. But for now it's a 66 LWB fleet with gold and white top. I am running a 283 with a 700R4 tranny. She still needs body work and paint but at least I can drive her where ever I want without worry. Brian
Look foward to seeing pics of your truck. What type of gas mileage do you get with your 700r4 tranny? Same goes for my truck needs body work and paint one of these days on funds permit it to.
I have no idea on my gas mileage. But I do know the tach dosen't sit a 3300 RPM on the highway anymore.
Before: 305 Chevy with 2 barrel & HEI / Granny 4 Speed / 3 :70 rear = 6-9 MPG After: 350 HO Crate Motor with Holley 4 Barrel & HEI / 700R4 / 3: 70 rear = 18 - 21 MPG With gas prices headed the way they are, the conversions should pay for itself in 7,000 miles ! DV
Thanks DValelntine sounds like it would pay for itself, no joke about todays gas prices very hard to get by person about has to take out a loan from the bank every time you fill your tank.
Exxon already owns both arms and one leg. Prett soon I won't be able to drive at all. It's all good though everyone in the Exxon corptate office just got new yachts.
just got on. don't know if your'e looking for that tranny. I'm putting a brand new rebuilt TH-400 in a 67 chevy i just recently aquired. I found the 400 in summit for ONLY 699.95. Thats a steal and a half. check it out if you'd like.
I promised to name my children Exxon, Shell, and B.P. if they'd let me have discounts. I've become hooked on E10 for my '65. It's 90 octane and I can pick it up for about three cents more than 87 octane. Its great. Here in Wichita gas dropped to $2.96. Fancy that.
