Here's an easy, but probably contraversial question. I'm restoring a 1950 3104 PU and plan to put 15" wheels and tires on it. I'm going to paint the wheels the same color as the body and plan to stripe the wheels with 3 stripes as per the original RPO. My question is: what is the width of the pinstripes? 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch? Let the debate begin.
I should think you'd want to check in two places for the straight skinny on this one Neil ; look in re-pop shop manuals for both car and truck as they were slightly different between the two... There's always pix in them that show the details of long forgotten stuff , poring over the pix in ALL sections of any old books with photos is always usefull for original details . IIRC the cars had two different widths of stripe on the same 16" wheels . The other place would be to go ask on ChevyTalk , a good forum that's mostly for hot rodders but Gene (?) is an old dealer mechanic who hangs out in the '47 ~ '54 forum and knows far more than I ever did about how they were built , details etc. You could write and ask Bob Adler , he'll know and he's a nice guy to boot , tell him Nate said hi . Oh crap ~ I guess that's _3_ sources to cheak huh ? If you look at unrestored wheels on junkers and project cars , you'll see they were all hand striped and you can do this too , make a simple plywood turntable and practice using water based paints at first - DO NOT use tape ! tape looks bad .
Original wheels that I have looked at and measured the stripes, the stripes are 1/4 inch wide. I do not know if you are aware of this bit of trivia, but 15 inch wheels did not come with pinstripes. The 16 inch wheels had the 3 stripes. Your restoration pack will tell you this if you doubt it.
thanks for the info, brian. i looked at the restoration pack for 1950 trucks, and it looks like they did have the 3 stripe option on rpo 288, 6.70x15 6 ply tires. were you looking at a 50 spec sht, or 49 or 51? Let me know (not that i'm anywhere close to painting or stripping).
Wheel Striping ~ Y or N ? Well ; Who's paying the bill on this rig anyway ? . If you find someone competent in So. Cal. who'll do it on the truck , lemme know as I'd like some nifty stripes on my old 16" wheels
Nate, i don't know of any in so. cal., but if you're ever in beautiful downtown Paris, Tennessee, go to Hart's Sign. They put pinstripes on the wheels of my '48 Chevy coupe back in 76 and they were awesome!
it's only 1976 miles, or one oil change. and think how sharp your truck would look with red pinstripes on the wheels. i saw your ride on stovebolt. sweet. love the writing on the back!
Are you sure you saw _my_ truck ? it has red wheels ,making it difficult to see red pinstripes.... If I but had the time , I'd take off and drive it there , I like to sightsee so the slower pace wouldn't bother me atall
Yes sir, i saw it, but was going by memory when i posted earlier. they say your mind is one of the first things to go! After taking a fresh look at it, those are definitely red wheels. Pinstripes the same color as the body would like pretty snazy. Reckon how many AD trucks you could see if you did make the drive? arizona rust free, New mexico rust free, texas panhandle, okla, arkansas and tennessee?
Sadly , during my last few road trips , I've seen few old unrestored trucks just lying about as they used to be all across America . Much if this is thanx to the unceasing building boom and the resulting efforts to " clean up " any area they hope to make $$ off of , can't sell $600,000.00 homes with old junk in the next block you know Still and all , if I but had the time , I'd go to Tennesee in my old truck as it'd be a fun drive and I have a few InterNet buddies I'd like to meet & greet .
Man, you guys are so lucky, a roadtrip over here consists of 10 miles of city traffic jams then 50 miles of hell on the freeway (gonna re-name them parking lots soon) bumper to bumper in first gear then you hop off the freeway for a break and you get charged 200 bucks for a coffee and dougnut at the truck stop, then another 50 miles of nose to tail only to find that its an accident on the other side and everyones rubber necking! Traffic Well yes and no ; Some cities have terrible traffic , since I don't sleep much I'm out on the road before the sun comes up most days when I'm traveling so traffic is managable . 20 years ago I'd be all alone @ 04:00 , now there's light traffic even then . America _is_ rather spread out tho' .
Neil, i take it that you live in London? What you're describing sounds like typical traffic getting to work here in Houston. My mother, who still lives in the country in Tennessee complains about the traffic there too. Last time I was there visiting I counted 6 cars all day! (and one of them was me!)
Get closer to the city in Tennessee and you'll find more than six cars. I work downtown and it takes me almost an hour to go twenty miles on a good day. They just installed our amber alert system on our interstate and people litterally almost stop to read it. I guess thats what you get when you live in the south. ( I can say that, I'm from the south)
London Traffic Seems to me I read somewhere that you have to pay a toll charge to even enter London these days , is that really true ? .
if it's true, is sounds like another case of taxation without representation, and we all know what happened the first time...
No, fellas, i don't live in london luckily! bout 25 miles from, but i work up there quite often. Toll charge is approx 15 bucks to go anywhere near the place, and you cannot park free anywhere, parking charges range from $1-70 in the suburbs to $3-80 PER HOUR!!!! in the centre of town, Before i even start work its cost me 60 or so bucks, so i try and avoid the god forsaken place, and every parking/ traffic violation you get is 180 bucks, everything! 2 mins over on the parking meter? 180 greenbacks, stop in a yellow box (if your wheels stop they got it on cctv) 180! everything is 180 bucks, And the maximum parking allowed in one spot is 4 hours, in some places 2! so if you work up there for a day, you gotta keep one eye on the time and run out and drive round for a half hour trying to find another parking bay! but it can't be in the same street!!!!! or you get a ticket. Vehicles are just seen as a cash cow in London, milk them as much as possible is the gov motto. and soon the speed limit is gonna be dropped to 20mph and toll up to 20 bucks! in one month earlier this year i ran up nearly 1,100 dollars in tolls, parking and fines!!!! so i hate the damn place. You wouldnt believe how they have messed up the place, nearly every red light has cameras and a yellow box in the junction, speed cameras are everywhere, literally hundreds of them, speed humps, one way streets that stop short cuts, width restrictions, red line no stop zones cover every major road in and around the centre, you name a way of making driving a nightmare snd we got it! The best one was before the toll they rigged all and i mean all the lights in London to stay red longer, some for over 4 mins, and traffic was dire, then they introduced the CONGESTION CHARGE as they call the toll, on the same day as the kids went on 6 week summer break (traffic is less than half the normal amount when kids are off school) and re-set the lights back to normal, and claimed that it was an enormous success, even when they had been exposed as con artists for pulling this stroke they still said it worked! All i can tell you is it costs me a fortune now to work up there and i can get to a place called Lincoln, 135miles away, quicker than it takes to go the 10 miles across london! sometimes it takes 3 hours to go that 10miles so th "congestion charge" really is working, hell it is! Damn, why did i get started on my fav hate subject, sorry guys Neil ________ Porn Movies
Wow , that really sux , sounds a lot like Taxation Without Representation , I woder where I heard that before ?
