i would like to improve the ride and handling on my truck while preserving it's heavy-duty workability. thanks in advance.
My neighbor was trying to talk me into the same thing. He was saying to dissasemble the leaf springs, painting them with a teflon tape, and adding a plastic incert to let the springs slide with no friction.
Chances are that you probably have the stock spring which have sagged a little over almost 30 years and now the main set of springs are touching the overloads. You can buy a new set of multi-stage leaf springs that will give you a pleasant ride when you are unloaded and stiffen up as you load the truck down. Or you can strip your springs down to the main set and get rid of the overloads and get a set of airbags can do the same thing.
