Restoring a 49 chevy pickup 3100 and just came across this forum. Built and install a 4 link suspention with a Ford 9" rear end. 350 V8 best guess at around 350 HP using a 400 turbo trans. Heidts front suspention. Right now cabs off and rebuilding it at this time.
Sounds like a fun hot rod , please don't call it ' restored ' as it surely isn't . Restored means " As new " and nothing else . There's quite a few hot rodders here who can give you good help . Also over on Chevy Talk , that's a hot rod biased board . Remember : all those rusty , greasy & bent original parts you take off , including the engine that only has 35 # compression in # 3 cylinder , is worth $$ to the resto guys....
Welcome To Your Forum I guess they should have a big warning sign "THIS FORUM IS NOT FOR HOTRODDERS!" Excuss me for buying orginal parts for MY SO CALLED HOTROD even though the cab, fenders, hood, box, bumpers, interiour, glass, and mirrors will be restored. Yes I did say restored! The frame, engine, drivetrain, brakes, and electrical will be UPDATED to todays vehicle standard. I want to drive this truck on a daily bases and not use it like a trophy just collecting dust. I guess that's a big welcome to your forum. Thank You
Can't we all just get along 1 man's hot rod is another man's restore. You say hot rod, I say daily driver. You say restore, I say daily driver. We all have the same thing in common, whether it's got a V-8 or a straight six, we all love to drive em! Mike
Well put Mike. I don't think anyone on this forum would intentionally belittle someone else's pride and joy, and while there may be a lot of good hearted "ribbing", when it is all said and done, everybody on this forum has one thing in common and that is an appreciation for cars and/or trucks and a passion to have something they can be proud to say is theirs. Me, being an old timer, i'm going stock, but that's not to say that i don't appreciate a beefy V8 breathing fire and smoking everything off the line between stop lights. Been there, done that (and didn't lose very many of them). Keep on truckin' baby!
here's to yah! Kens 50 couldn't have said it better. Before I posted anything, I read and read. I found out that there is a wealth of knowledge out there. I hope iwantsnow comes to realize the same thing I have. (And it's like Kens 50) The thing we share is a love for the round fenders! (And we like to rib each other.) I personally appreciate the responses I get. Sure, I have more questions now than before, but I know if you all can be patient, and if you can put up with my wishy-washyness, I know I'll end up with the ride of my life. Nate- Thanks for all your advice and direction! I know now I'M BUILDING A HOTROD!!!: I love these faces! ...and the facial expressions! Now I know why there is such a wide range!
I don't know why that people get so darn pissed off over a little picking. Mine is going to be for the most part a show trophy so should I get pissed off because you slammed those trucks . I don't think so, Life is to short to get your feelings hurt that easy. This is a great forum and I have a lot of respect for every one on it. Maybe you should try us out a while before judging us.
I am new to ths forum too. I have been a member for less than a month. When I mentioned that I was about to dump $12 Grand into my old 48 I got replies that were either supportive or thought I was crazy. I appreciated both because that is why I asked. I wanted opinions. I work at a computer 8 hours a day. One thing I learned a long time ago is that a lot is lost when using email or messaging. You can't see the other person smile or frown. They can't pop you in the shoulder and laugh about what they just said. When communicating via text you have to give the other person the benefit of the doubt. The cool thing about these trucks is that you can do anything you want with them. There is no law that says they have to be one way or the other. Tha twould be boring as the devil. But it would also be boring if we all agreed on how to fix these trucks. To iwantsnow and any other new member I say welcome. There is plenty of room here for eveyone.
By the way Tailgater, you know I was ribbing you about the cost of your paint job. I admit, I had a momentary laps of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ envy. I would, if I could! So to make me feel better, I have this feeling that I'll be the first to section paint their truck with a spray CAN! (In carefully taped off sections that if done right, will appear as a good? paint job.) Laugh all you want. I like being original. :^) BECAUSE I'M FINANCIALLY CHALLENGED! K? Geeze!
Try _Reading_ Before Critisizing ! Don't get your panties in a knot ~ I gave your post a thumbs up and said it sounds like fun ~ We speak more or less English here and you're building a very cool old truck but it isn't " restored " . It'll prolly be way better than my old POC beat to shyte work truck . Whadda ya want , flowers ? . grow up
Zig, No problem. I wasn't even thinking about your response. Like I said, I wanted opinions and I got them. I have no problem at all. By the way, as I was driving home last night I was nailed by an 8 point buck. https://talk.classicparts.com/images/smilies/eek.gif He took the right front fender and passenger side door. His antlers smacked the hood. It was may daily driver, a 95 Camry. I dropped collision last year because it has its tenth birthday. Looks like I will be even further in to the body man. That ain't the way I wanted to get that buck.https://talk.classicparts.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
K... I'll get THAT thought out of my head! Years from now, I have my 52 done. I'm driving into work in the dark (because that's just the way it has to be this time of year..) and here bounds a deer! Sorry. You know, of course, had you not dumped your insurance...
Zig, Looks like you and me both go to work early. Yeah, dropping the insurance sounded like a good idea at the time. With as many deer as we have around here I reckon I might put collision/comprehensive back on it when I get it done. The car only has 87,000 miles so I will probably drive it at least 120,000 more before I turn it out to pasture.
Gentlemen, Maybe we should come up with a new name to call our progects lets say something like.......RETROSTORED.....what you think ???????
hey tailgater, is it true that Tennessee is trying to get rid of all their deer? In talking with my bro-in-law who lives in w tenn, he was telling me that you are allowed to shoot a buck a day and 3 does, or something to that effect.
OK vent is over Your right I shouldn't get my panties in a knot, I guess I have to buy some first. This isn't my first build on a classic-rod. What pissed me off when someone has to define what words mean. That's when I say get a life. I stipped this truck down completely and know every bolt and nut on this truck. I understand why people keep it the way it was. But for me after looking at the chassis, I decieded it was not safe for hwy driving at 70mph - 80mph and wanted to put some power into it and still look orginal except under the hood, and drive train. Smoking tires I just can't do anymore I think I gave that up when I was 18 and ended up paying for my own. At 14 I started off with a 58 Biscayne and 15 I bought a 74 Cutlass S. I worked my ass off as a kid to pay for these cars and there parts and insurance. I am still on a budget and make most of the parts myself. Since I buy parts from this web site I thought it would be a good thing to see who is out on this site, and what kind of project they have. The curves on this truck are what Retro is all about. They brought a little back with the SSR but still needs more. As far as the Deer, Where I live, and were I grew up deer was a common problem. The main thing is like always, is you didn't get hurt. A deer last year tried giving my wife a kiss and blew out the driver side window. Freaked the heck out of her. She got out and checked to see if she got cut and was fine. The damage was alot worse then I expected. Bent the door piller besides denting the whole side. It sucked for driving home at 15 degrees without a window. OK now can we get along. Rich
Rich, glad to have you back. i gave up smoking tires after i had to buy my first set of new tires. I had a '72 Nova, 350 with 3 speed hurst floor shift. the funniest part about that was they put E78-14 tires on it from the factory. Those little babies got lit up in all 3 gears. I beefed it up with F70-14 polyglass. Man i loved that car.
I hear you on the money on the tires. That Cutlass I had I replaced the tires twice in one year at 16. Then my dad back then held his hand out. I said what's up. He said if your going to pay the tire company you can pay me for rent. I was 16 and I think that kinda curb the tire issue. I am going to try to get some pic's of the truck this week end and show were I am at. I have been modifing a Honda VTX1300C Motorcycle right now and decided to get back on track since the riding season is pretty much done with up here. Rich
