Hi my name is Eddie and I just got a 65 long bed stepside and I was just wondering if that is sort of rare because all the other 65's I see have never been a long step they are always a short step or a fleet. Also I have the inline six cylinder and was trying to figure out what cubic inch it is. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Eddie, Welcome to the forum.

Rare is a relative term... All 40 year old vehicles are getting rare. But if your question is related to the number that were produced in 1965, no, they are not all that rare....

Try running your vin numbers to see what motor you should have. To find out for sure you'll have to run the numbers on the block.

Thanks guys. I took your advice I found out that I have the 230 inline six. A new question is how much can you bore the cylinders out to on one of these engines without risking a cracked block or engine failure. My engine has a rebuilder's badge on the side that says it has been bored .060 over already. The reason I ask is because it runs good but I think the rings might be a little worn or sticking because I get some smoke when I goose on the gas. Also another option I was thinking about a 283 swap and wondered where i might find one in rebuildable condition. Keep in mind im from brandon,Ms. Thanks again for all your help.

Long bed stepsides are unique to today's specifications . . .

I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

Eddie; welcome, I own 3ea 230 sixes; have this thing about building inlines. Unforntunately @ .060 you have no choice to bore this any more. If the cyl bore wear is minimal; you could re-ring & valve job and get by. Another thing to look for on these old girls is the top bolt hole for the water pump to the top of the deck on the cyl block will crack. This was a common problem with these, the casting is real thin in that area. If this is cracked; it can be fixed; but pricey. Better off finding a 283 / small block and going that direction. Ck out junk yards / want ads. Good luck

Actually, In Oregon, Everbody Has A Short Fleet Exept Me. There All I See Espesially Tubbed Out At The Drag Strip. We Do Have A Lot Of Short Steps Too But Not Many Of Them Have Been Rodded Out, Mostly Older Gentelman That More Then Likely Bought Them New, And They Still Look New And Origanal. Lucky Guys!!

Thanks for the help. I thought .060 was the max but it confused me because the parts store listed a sets of rings up to .100 I think I will most likely go with a 283 or a 350.
