1. just wondering how easy the superide is to install. 2. what is a great firewall mount booster/mastercylinder setup for disc/disc brakes? 3. if I convert to p/s what is the best fit steering column? thanks
Any gm column will work but you need to take in consideration that if you use a superride, you will have rack and pinion steering and you need to keep the angle of the steering linkage and rag joint to a min. You will also need to consider if you want a column ign. or stock ign. in the dash. You can buy aftermarket columns in different lengths to accomodate a smaller angle from the steering box/rack and the column. For a brake set up, you can buy aftermarket under the floor master/booster or buy a firewall mounted type that has a swinging pedal. You will need a prop. valve and residual valve for disc/disc, if you use a rear disc rear end. You can find out alot of info from classic trucks magazine and others that have articles about these sort of modifications, or you could ask a streetrod shop in your area for info. Hope this helps.
steering and brakes Thanks for the info Bill as it is a good start. I think I am going to keep the stock straight axle for now and just go to power steering and a firewall mounted booster/master cylinder. Someone has already converted to disc in the front. With the stock axle, what is the best fitting steering column with keeping the ignition on the dash and without spending too much money? Thanks for the help. Steve in Boise
Ididit, flamming River are a few that sell aftermarket columns with GM wiring, basically a gm style column. They come in several different lengths, ideally you want the steering wheel to be a comfortable distance from the dash and the bottom of the column not to extend too far from the fire wall, maybe 1 1/2" to 2". You can also buy a kit to mount a gm steering gear box on your frame and I believe classic parts advertises one. They may be able to tell you what length column works best. I have a column out of a '78 camaro that is too long, not sure what the length is, never measured it. Hope this helps you out. Sounds like you got a good project going. Bill
