anybody know anything about the throttle cable, like where it attaches, and maybe some common problems? mine doesn't work. i haven't looked real close at it yet, but i'll bet it attaches to the carb somewhere? i'll get back on here after looking at it, probably tell you guys nevermind, i figured it out, but oh well. here goes! thanks!! jon
cable are you talking about the throttle cable on the dashboard? well, I am assuming, because the gas pedal has no cable on it. it has metal linkage.... and the throttle knob on the dash is connected to the left hand side of the carb when you are facing the cab of the truck.
simple Have Nate come out and do it for you. I put in a new wiring harness and completely reworked my gauges, but dang if I could get my throttle cable to work the way I wanted it to. There is a plate on my GMC's carb closest to the firewall. It hooks up/holds down both choke and throttle cable, but there is also a stop that goes on the inner wire once it passes through the linkage. One of these days- like over this Thanksgiving break- I'll try my best to post a picture or two because pictures are worth... a thousand words!
yes, pictures thanks, zig. pictures would be awesome. maybe i'll take some too. yeah, i was referring to the throttle cable on the dash. not a big deal, but it would be nice to have for cold starts. jon
As Zig mentioned , there's a little sheel metal stamped bracket that is held in place by one of the carby airhorn screws , the throttle cable goes into it vertically and passes throgh the vertical throttle linkage , the cable goes through the tiny hole that is now occupied by a cotter pin and then you'll need a cable stop , sometimes called a barrel nut , most FLAPS carry them although many times they don't even know it ....... Remember : the throttle cable is for warm up or increased engine speeds when working with the PTO but never , EVER to be used as a cruise control device ! . If you still have the original cable you can usually soak it well in penetrant whilst flexing it a bit to get it loose enough to pull it out , then polish the center cable with # 0000 or finer gread steel wool then grease it well and re-insert , it is tricky to get it all the way through the Bowden but it -is- do-able if you have patience . When you attch the cable to the carby , just like the choke you _MUST_ leave the knob pulled out anout 1/4" before clamping the cable's working end . I keep a wooden clothes pin on the Bowden up under the dash and use it to hold the throttle cable out when I need it as the grease akes it work very smoothly so the engine vibration causes it to creep back in .
pics and more questions ok, got under the hood finally and i took some pics. here goes- there are some questions after- ok, so there's a screw (red) for the choke cable (blue) which seems to tighten it down and hold it in place. is this what you were saying you can find at FLAPS?? as you can see, there's nothing like that on the throttle cable (green). the second picture shows how the throttle cable goes through a little cotter pin hole. is that correct? and how does a screw fit into the picture? do i need some sort of assembly for the screw to fit into? thanks guys!! jon
GREAT pictures ! I gotta learn how to add the arrows and text . Anyway , pic # 2 clearly shows you're missing the cable stop ('barrel nut ') ~ it's kind of like the brass thingie that has the screw holding the choke cable except : it's a brass cylinder and not tethered to anything apart from the cable center .
photoshop four years of graphic design school finally paid off! ha!! that's cool, so is this piece (cable stop, barrel nut) something i can get easily from my local NAPA?? or is it a junkyard find? jon
NAPA , Kragen , Shucks , AutoZone etc. ~ pretty much anyplace that had the drawers full of hardware ~ I bet you local big box hardwars store has it too ~ they all now have dozens of small part drawers full of this kinda stuff . Prolly a lwan mower shop too . Try telling the guy @ NAPA you need the do-hicky (technical term there) on the end of your choke cable .
If you can't find the cable stops at a FLOPS, I think Chevy Duty or J** C***** sales them, I bought some a while back. Dave
