I recently bought my 56 with a camaro clip. It is an unfinished project that was running , but PO removed engine. The steering column is out of the same Z28, but is non-tilt and floor shift. I'd like to install a column shift, tilt column. Can anyone suggest a replacement? I'm looking for something I can find at a local wrecking yard, not an Ididit or Flaming River. Thanks.

I did some measuring today. Camaro column is 33" long, with 1" splined shaft that connects to the intermediate shaft. Any suggestions?

I had a similar situation but I went to a th700 and my column shifter wouldn't work (only had D and L positions). Picked up a column from a mid/late 80's chevy van. This had a different connection (1" DD intead of the spline). I cut the fixed joint off the camaro linkage and got a 1" DD X 3/4" DD u-joint. Used a Billet Specialties 2 1/2" drop mount to hang from dash. Had to cut the floor mounting plate loose so that it could be re-positioned or you could just get one of the standard 2 " column to floor mounts and remove the old one completely. Your linkage to the tranny may have to change, I'm going to use a lokar cable shift linkage.

    Good luck with it,
    Matt

You might want to try a late 70's Chav van. It's a little cleaner looking. Some had tilt. It's a column shift and no ignition. It's 33" from space between column and steering wheel to bottom of the 2" tube. The firewall rubber mount is not fixed to the column like the post 80 van so it can be moved around and shaped to fit the firewall. It has a 3/4" shaft so you'll need to change your u-joint. On mine I had to push the column all the way up in the firewall hole to get the clearance for the column shift linkage. If I remember correctly I think the spacer at the dash has it about 3 to 3 1/2" below the dash.
