ok so I have had my 47 3/4 ton for 6 years now and always was told it had an inclosed driveshaft so I believed it. Well today I was under it and noticed that it has a drive shaft and a u joint right in front of the rear end. So i guess someone has changed it over the years. So now can I use a diferent tranny without changing the rear end?

Sounds like someone changed it out in the past alright. See if you can find a serial number on it anywhere and we might be able to figure out what year it is and the gear ratio.

I'm no AD expert, but I thought all 3/4 ton ADs were open drive shaft.

I'm not sure about the 3/4 ton,but didn't the heavy trucks have a different driveline setup? Its been a few years since I've been under a big truck, lol.

    Duh !

Of course you're correct Bill ! I went sailing right past the " 3/4 Ton " part but that's still good news as he can easily find the much vaunted 3.72 pumpkin out of a later model automatic equipped 3/4 ton van or P - chassis , plenty of them in scrap yards and behind sheds & garagers all across America.
