do you still have the enclosed drive line? if so i don't think it will stand up to that 350. i destroyed 3 or 4 ujoints on my old 235 six cyl. that was barly over a 100 hp. 350's start at 290 hp. your looking for serious breakdowns if you ever use that throttle

I believe there are posts to this back a ways. I don't believe there are any, but it seemed like for the above mentioned reason, you'll be swapping out the rear and transmission now. I DID see a 283 hooked up to what I guess was the original tranny in that wonderful junk yard inn Goodman, MO. I didn't check to make sure, but I assumed it was.

    Stock Tranny To SBC

Yes , get the V-ate bell housing from any '55 to '67 V-ate equipped truck and it should be a bolt up deal .

LOTS of dead '60 ~ '67s in junkyards all across America , don't worry if the truck is all rusted or smashed , that bellhousing is indestructible .

Any good junkman worth his salt will know just what you want .

The trucks up to 1953 had mounts that bolted to the side of the bellhousing. 54 and up had the two bolts that bolted from under the crossmember(one on each side) I was trying to remember the V8 bellhousing from a 55 up car, how it bolted up? Seemed like it was different. I've seen people take those steel universal bellhousings and weld brakets on both sides for the original mounts. Still trying to figure the best way to do this, always need a good challenge. Chris

Nate with his letters again- You WERE in the military, weren't you. Reading your posts flashes me back to looking at a set of orders. I could never tell if it was because no one knew how to spell, or they were just saving time writing those. I'll guess that SBC means Something that will Beat the Cr-- outta' that stock rear end. (?) A 350 hooked to a torque tube through the stock 3-4 speed? That's GOTTA' hurt!

I dont really know if I want to change ther rear I am low on money haha. Ive been thinking maybe it would be better just to go back with a 6. The only reason I was going with the 350 is because I had an extra one laying around the shop, but if I cant punch it without tearing up somthing whats the point.

    But then again...

I started off like you. "I'll just add a V-Nate." Reading all these posts has taken me EVERYWHERE. 6 with a T5, stock with new rings in the ass end. But- if you go stock, you need to probably put a new this and that on your block, 'cause- well- it's old.
The bottom line is, it'll take money. So all you need to concider is where are you going with your ride, how fast do you want to go to get there, and how long do you want to do this for- the rest of your life, or just a while?
One thing for sure- you've got the right site to help you with your direction. these guys are tops! I'm just wind.

Im not trying to build a show truck. I plan on getting a motor in it doing most of the body work myself as good as I can and then taking it to a cheap paint shop and spraying it flat black. Im not going to drive it everyday probly just when I have time and its nice outside. I think I would rather have a 6 with dual carbs or somthing like that than a 350. Sure the 350 would be faster but the 6 would just be cool!!

    tears..

There's a guy on here by the name of vwnate1. I think you just brought tears to his eyes. Believe me- if I didn't want my truck to be a second skin, I'd stick with my smooth, sweet sounding 228 tied to a T5... But alas... I know if I'm gonna spend bucks on -my- ride, I'd better make sure I can go anywhere, any time, any place.:(

    sigh...

    Ya man!!!

I listened to Nate when I first got my truck and thought about doing the V-ate thing. New springs, new brakes, new trans, new rear, lots of $$$$$. Nate said to try the 55-59 board to find a motor. He said there were lots of guys doing V-ate swaps there that had good running 235's laying around in their shops collecting dust. I posted and the next morning some great guy responded. Long story short I took a long drive and picked up a good running 235 from radiator fan to tail shaft for FREE. Guy threw in hundreds of dollars of brake parts he wasn't using for free also. What a deal. Two tanks of gas and 12 hours in the Suburban was worth it for sure. Lots of good running 235's out there on the cheap. Just look a little. will make your life and project a whole lot easier and cheaper. I am doing the exact same thing as you. Building a work truck, no trailer queen. Doing it for fun with my kids (me too) on a very low budget. My post read "Wanted: good running 235 6 cylinder engine. Anybody done a V-ate swap that has one laying around your shop? I will come and take it out of your shop space. I like to drive, so anywhere reasonably close is okay". Try it. You may be pleasantly surprised like I was. That was in

    SNIF , Where's My KLEENEX....?

Oops , sorry ~ I got a little bit choked up there for a moment... :p

A 6 banger well that's different ! you'll be the only one at the car show with one under the hood and dual carbies , split exhaust manifold and that classic sound of the Wolrd Famous Chevy InLine " Cast Iron Wonder " :)

I have a 235 in my '49 shop truck , there's pix of it somewheres on this board and I know someone will post up a link . this old piece of crap truck is working still , faithfull after 53 years of continual commercial service ~ show me a SBC that's done _that_ . you'll find a well tuned 235 will zip right along @ 65 MPH and sprint up to over 75 in a pinch but they don't like high RPM's (over 3,200 for long periods)

The stock tranny & rear end are nearly indistructable if you're gentle with them , ' punching it ' isn't in the cards for these old trucks if you want it to last .

    -Nate (note : it's NATE plain & simple :p

    Acronyms

    It means :

    Small

    Block

    Chevy

Since it really doesn't matter if it's a 265 , 283 , 327 350 or on and on , they all interchange as you guys know far better than I do .

    Longevity & Long Distance

I drive my old '49 3100 Series work truck all over the Southern California deserts , towing cars , hauling scrap or engines Etc. , sometimes I just go for a nice 600 mile cruise as I like to see what's happening and from behind that big fat ivory steering wheel is a good place to travel .

I put more miles on my unrestored , beat to shyte clapped out pickup truck with it's mystery 1957 235 C.I. engine than two of most people's V-ate powered trucks ever do .

Don't let the age of your InLine engine throw you , they're made to last and operate very economically too .

I just hop in it and drive anywhere , anyplace , anytime , ALL the time .

    There it is

Check the "Stovebolt" page on the swap meet section under parts for sale. There is a guy, Anchondo, with a 235 in good running condition complete with trans that he has for sale. He is going to do a V-ate swap. Now, if you're close to El Paso (which is where I think he is), u-r in luck.

Nate- you do this just to keep me spiralling, don't you? Stock trans and rear end? (I forget what you said those were.)
