    Hello friends,

Does anyone know if there is a product that is a good reproduction of the original interior firewall cover - anything even close?

    thanks,
    Caleb

Check Chevs of the 40's in Vancouver, WA and Obsolete Chevy in Georgia. Both catalogs list polyurethane covers with fiber pads.

Bossman, thanks - I called Chevs of the 40s and they said their product is ABS and is baskically the same as Polyurethane. I don't know the difference myself. This must be the same part that everyone else is selling. I believe the original part was some sort of cardboard.

I'm thinking that if I want an original look then I need to get some vinyl paint in the original color.

    thanks for the info.

    Caleb,
I used the cover you are talking about. Pretty sure I bought it here. It is indeed a textured plastic face, with a light fiberglass type insulation. It has perforated cut outs for the harness, and heater. It mounts with the stock clips, and fits pretty well. It is not however, the same as the original. It is probably better, but not the same. The one I took out was very heavy, tarred style, if I remember correctly. I myself have not seen an original style replacement anywhere. Not sure if anybody makes one. Anyways, hope this helps you....Mike

I just went through this and I didn't find any original style cardboard type out there. One restorer here in town always trys to retain and fix the original one by taping tears, painting, etc. I believe that there are 3 types of replacements out there. A very cheap vinyl sheet with dryer lint glued to the back, (about $40), a fiberglass molded model, (about $100 at Jim Carter) and the ABS one spoke about here, (about $140.) I went with the Jim Carter model because I was ordering other parts from them. I am happy with it, but wondered if the ABS one is nicer.

I bought the cheap vinyl sheet with dryer lint on the back and if I do it again I would at look harder at the more expensive ones.
    My 2 cents

Don't know if this helps but I laid fibre-glass over my rough cardboard original, then removed it and painted it black and covered the reverse side with a self-adhesive foam sheet we use over here in the air con industry, it not only has exceptional sound proofing qualities but its superb for heat insulation too, and as an added plus it's zero fire rated, it comes in 2ft by 3ft sheets in various thickness up to 2 inch! only costs about ?16 English folding, I will be using it on the cab floor too.

    My 2 cents

    Mad dog and englishman!

Get that ABS one. It is almost a perfect fit, and the color and texturing make it look like an orignal one, but it will not fall apart like the orginal.
