    Jealous yet?

That's right. One of the few things that the guys who prepped my 55.1 for the Old Navy store DIDN'T cut out was the factory turn signal mechanism (not dealer add-on accy., but a true factory turn signal), complete with switch, cancelling mechanism, etc. However, it was under the seat when I got the truck and can't for the life of me figure out how it stays put on the column. It has notches that correspond to mates on the coumn which position it properly and prevent it from turning around the column. But, how does it stay put? How do you prevent it from sliding down the column? I keep looking for a set screw location, but can't find it. Maybe I am just not looking hard enough for it as I haven't rebuilt it yet (waiting for a new switch assy.) Anybody know how this is affixed to the column?

Andy, the 54-59 turn signal cups all used a wedge to secure to the colume. There should be a hole on the bottom side of the cup. CP sells new wedges. Carfull not to over tighten.Chris

mine is attached on the column with clamps like you would find on a radiator hose. probably a hillbilly fix, but hey! it works!

Thanks Ken and Jon but you guys I believe are talking about the more common dealer installed option. What I have is a true factory installed turn signal that is like a cup underneath the steering wheel. I think azcarman has it about right, but I don't know what wedges he is talking about. Hey Chris...thanks, but what is the elusive CP part number of which you speak?

    Thanks Chris,

That part is not in the 47-54 catalog. Great heads-up. Spoke to tech at CP and it is indeed the needed part. Thanks a bunch again.

    Thanks Nate,

I AM lucky. Four beautiful kids, my health, beautiful and understanding girlfriend.

Nice piece that, no? My 55.1 is a deluxe cab and originally came with that signal option, deluxe heater, outside stainless window trim, radio. But the Old Navy prep crew cut MOST of the good stuff out. I thought it might even have the rarer than hen's teeth electric wiper motor, but alas no. I like vacuum units anyway. BTW, what is the name of the wiper rebuild people? They are right here about 20 minutes from me and I can't remember the name.

Okay, tell me more about the tailights and signals and wiring up this switch. Enquiring minds want to know. Am about to install my new harness, have tailights with double contacts and conversion parts for front grill lights with double contacts in transit from CP. Just received shipping notification. Trying like heck to keep the costs down. Crazy ex-wife squeezing for every penny I own.

Andy, that's way too cool. Didn't have a clue when chevy first starting doing that. BTW, Ficken is the wiper place close to you. www.wiperman.com

I have a hand-drawn wiring digram of the turn signal switch at home if you need it. Will attach it tonight.

Andy , how is it you got an Old Navy truck ? did the store close up ? .

Does your '55/1 have the earlier grille on it ? all the '55s here in LA have the early front ends swapped onto them....

Hi, please let me introduce myself ( I feel like a voyeur- I've been visiting here for months but I'm new to this hobby and don't know enough to contribute to the discussions)- Name is Glenn, I have a 54 Chevy 1/2 ton and a 36 Chevy 1/2 ton-both in the process of being restored. I greatly benefit from the discussions and enjoy the comradeship that you all share--
BUT, I can make small contribution! For those running vacuum wipers, there is a FLAPS called O'Reilly (here in western Montana) that can get dual action fuel pumps that provide better wiper action if I remember Nate's comments correctly. THEY QUOTED ME AROUND $71.00 FOR DUAL VS. $23 FOR SINGLE ACTION PUMPS-- I don't know if this is a good price but I think Nate mentioned that these are hard to get.
Thank you all for the info that I've learned here and I hope this may help someone.
    Glenn

Thanks Bill. Would greatly appreciate that!!!:D Welcome Glenn and thanks for the info. CP does sell that part and at a good price, too.

Nate. My boys had been pestering me about when we were going to build a car together and I told them that when the right project came along, we would do it. I have a patient that has a small boneyard and every once in a while comes by at the end of my day to get adjusted with something hanging on the hook of his wrecker. One day last August he shows up with my 55.1 Old Navy display truck. I fell in love with it. We got to talking and he said "my landlord is giving me grief about all the cars in the yard. If you take it NOW, you can just have it. That's how I got the truck. I didn't ask HIM where or HOW he got it:rolleyes:

Welcome from sunny England Grandpa (you may come to reget that name) you probably have a lifetimes worth of experience and it is more than welcome here, as you can probably tell from the posts on here, we dont just chat about trucks, sometimes its good to just chew the fat and make friends.

Andy: This is my drawing. The switch is shown in all three positions. Top is "off", middle is signalling a right turn and bottow is signalling a left turn. Wire colors are shown only on the "off" view. The colors are correct for my 57 GMC and the 55-59 Chevy aftermarket (not Delco) switch I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. I assume they are the same for your 55.1.

    Glenn :

WELCOME to the nuthouse ! :p

Airtex makes those dual action fuel pumps and I got mine from NAPA for about $37.00 BRAND NEW so hit your FLAPS and ask ! .

There are places that rebuild the original AC pumps to so don't go tossing one out just because it's old & crusty....
