    Ok guys, whats the score with the cam gears, been waiting a week or so for bearings etc so i can start assembling my engine but the supplier sent through one of those composite cam gears, not an aluminium one! should i trash the gears or are they ok? was so hoping to get stuck into the bottom end this weekend but now that might be doubtful:( read a few of the earlier posts and Nate just says use aluminium gears but does not explain why. help!

    The way I always heard it was that the composite gears were used for light weight and to keep the noise down. Down side is that they break easier than metal gears. I am sure the master will chime in with other points or to point out what a foolish young grasshopper I am.

    S'NOT a marble ~ that's a Kent-Moore Chevy 6 click typ valve adjusting tool ! :rolleyes:

    Touch it and die . :D

    The fiber gears were indeed used for noise reasons . they tend to give up on a time or heat cycle basis and when they go , you stop . dead . RIGHT THERE :mad:

    I like , use and recommend metal gears , the cam gear will be aluminum , I am shocked you found a new cam gear that's not in a dusty 40 year old box ~ maybe they're making new ones again ? with improved fibre ? I dunno but it's NOT going into any engine I own .

    It is critical to source both gears from the same manufacturer as different manufacturer's use ever so slightly different pitch on the gear teeth , this will cause rapid wear and failure (not to mention NOISE) if you should be unlucky enough to get a mis matched set .

    I hope this helped ? .

    Aw, why couldnt you have said 'they are fine mate, use the fibre gear, no problem at all' now ive got to source an aluminium gear set because of that niggly little voice in my head saying 'Nate said it will break'

    Well ;

    I meant to say it might break , there's still a few out there in service but once (like 1979 dig) I was sitting in a 1957 panel truck at a stop light , about 3 miles from my house and I heard this loud " zipping " noise , like a giant zipper being opened and at the same time , my engine puttered into silence ~ I just couldn't believe it ! here I'd paid $35.00 for a junkyard core engine and only got 10,000 miles out of the damned thing . just for sh*ts & giggles I tried the starter ~ nope ! the engine cranked like it had zero compression in all cyclinders because that's what happens when the cam gear's teeth get ripped off .

    Good thing Billy-Bob was driving for Verdugo Valley Tow so I got a free tow all the way to the top of the hill where I lived... :p

    By all means ! go ahead and use the fibre gear ~ it's new , right ? :D .
