There is a cannister type oil filter on ebay about to go off in about 4 hours (5pm CST), today Thursday 3rd. Does this have a rubber in the top part of the cannister or do the filters do all the sealing (rubbers on top and bottom of filter)?

both, one for the lid, and there are two on the filter itself, inside where it slides on to the pole.

believe it or not, there's quite a few of 'em in the junkyards, if you can find one with old cars. you may want to consider the spin on type, i know there's a website somewhere that shows you how to retrofit them to your 235. e-pay has them occasionally, but i'm sure you've noticed the high price tag there. lubbock, huh? not too far from alamogordo.

    Kent ;

As Jon said it's is best to find one on an old engine and take that , clean it up and re-paint , replace the hoses (Chevy Duty) as this way you'll have all the little parts , U-bolts with matching hardware etc. .

Often that old rusted to junk short block lying in the sand will have it still....

NOS filter kits on E-pay if you're rich , I think those go for $100.00 or so usually .

Ha KentC just wait I recently picked up a Perfect AC Delco one minus the hoses at a swap meeting with hardware for $20.00. They are out there sometimes just need to keep a eye open. Like Nate said CP has good replacement hoses. The brackets are the hard thing. Also check the bottom area were the inside pipe mounts inside the housing make sure is not rusted out at the seam. Most are ok because they had oil still in them. But some can be rotted out No way to properly repair them. Good Luck

    Cannister Oil Filter

I was having an inspection sticker put on the car on Friday and asked the mechanic if he knew where I could find a used one. He said do look in the back room, some old irrigation motor remains were scattered back there. Lo and behold was one still attached to a manifold, bright orange it was. It looks like it will work. $30 I paid.
Now, I am undercertain how to hook it up as it was detached. It looks like the side hole in the unit should go to where my oil pressure guage attaches in (it is a "T" connector) to the block. The other looks like it might go to the lower block also on the drivers side, straight down toward the oil pan, from the intake/exhaust manifold, front of carb section. Is this correct? Currently my block has a square small plug screwed in there.

    KentC,
On mine the oil pressure tube is in a T near the back on the driver's side at about the same level as the rear water cock. A hose from the other part of the T goes high on the side of the oil filter canister. The bottom hose from the oil filter canister goes to a tap that is further toward the front on the driver's side but is just above the lip that is over the oil pan.
    Hope this helps,
    Gater

yeah, mine's the same kent. this is a terrible picture, but it's the best i could come up with on such short notice. you can see on the right the water pet-cock gater mentioned and the T just to the left of it (all covered in oil) it's an old picture. i'll try and get another picture for the bottom oil line up here too.

By George, I think that is where I was going to plug it in, but I will have to check when I get home. Yes, I would like to see a picture on the other bottom connection point. Thank you very much.

That is some really great pictures and I can hook it up now. I need new hoses, afraid to use the old ones. You are kind to take the time to help me. Thank you very much.

    Oil flow

Before connecting the oil filter cannister, I have an existing oil line hookup that I am requesting comments on.
From the pictures above, see the connection point coming from the side of the oil filter cannister, that connects to the oil outlet hole - next to the water drain outlet on the block (on the drivers side under the manifold). On my motor, up until now, there is a 1/4" oil-line going from this oil outlet, going around the rear of the motor - around to an oil hole on the head - in the middle of the head, about 1" below the valve/rocker arm cover, (on the passenger side of the motor). Apparently this oil line (looks homemade, low skilled) was put in for a reason and I am not sure of its purpose and if I need to remove it or keep it in. Thank you for the comments.

    Hey Jon,

That is one seriously clean looking steering box. How'd you do that? Doesn't yours leak like the rest of them? Or did you clean it up and replace the seals?

    KentC,
The passenger side hole on mine has a 1/4" plug in it. You may want to wait on other opinions but I would say you could do away with that little plumbing job.

it's been like that since i bought it, i haven't even put a rag to it, but the previous owner said he did get some work done on the steering, so they must've replaced the seals i guess.

    Boy , this is a fun thread ! :p

Jon ~ when was the last time you checked your steering box lube ? looks like long time no plug out...

About the oil flex hoses : Jon is using WAAYYY overkill high pressure swadjed fittings there , Chevey Duty has the " Just So " correct hoses in stock cheaply -OR- (farmer/roadside fix here) you can simply carefully grind the crimped parts of your old hoses and regular hose barbs will be there , get some good , oil resistant hose and some better quality hose clamps (Volvos & Mercedes,SAABs in Pick-A-Part all have GREAT full sircle clamps ) and install .

The hand made 3/16" or 1/8" oil line going from the pressure "T" to the passenger side of the cylinder head , is VERY IMPORTANT as it provides a goodly flow of oil to the rocker shaft after the internal one plugs up with sludge or if the cylinder head is mis-matched to the engine block or the wrong head bolts were used ~ I'd not remove it . you _can_ bend one up that looks much prettier if you want but it is vital to have oil coming out of the weep holes on your rockers ! .

GM used to sell kits to add these extranal head oiling lines .

WHOOPS ! gotta go ~my brother is here and we're off to look at a super cheap tranny for my old mercedes Benz ~ maybe $35.00 or so .

    BYE for now guys .
