Can you weld up a engine block ? I have a crack on left side at the rear of my block. The engine size is a 216. I want to keep my 1947 1 ton all orginal. What do they mean matching numbers ? The ser # is 7143403885 . The tag on the door is engine # x191816. The # on the block is 3835849.

i have NO IDEA about welding an engine block, but it doesn't really sound like a good idea to me. of course, i'm no mechanic. i draw pretty pictures. as far as matching numbers, good luck. my truck was registered by the number on the block, some were registered by the number on the cowl, but i don't think there were many where both numbers were involved. you can run your numbers to see if it's even from the same year as your truck- i think the inliners page or stovebolters, one of those has the charts. you'll have to google those sites- i'm at work right now and don't have them in front of me.

    Welding Cracked Cylinder Blocks

Cracked from freezing or did the water jacket finally rust through to the surface ? .

If cracked from freezing , you can probalby have it " Swedish Welded " this is actually peening as it doesn't involve any heat . look it up there's still a very few out there who'll do this .

If it's really in need of welding , this is tough as Cast iron needs to be heated in an oven before it's welded then it must be carefully cooled off very slowly..

of course this means _total disassembly of the engine and replacement of all the non cast iron bits in it like the cam bearings and the delicate upper oiling pass through line and fittings....

Good luck , I hate to say it but I'd prolly junk the engine as there's still plenty of perfectly good 216's lying 'round going into landfills and srap piles ~ if you research the correct serial numbers (the stamped ones) you can prolly find the correct 1947 engine ' On The Cheap ' and clean , paint & dress it " Just So " before re-fitting it .

You may have to travel a ways to fetch it though....
