Looking for advice on engine swap for a 1962 C10 2 wheel drive. Want to take out the 6cyl and put in a small block. Will motor frame mounts from a 67 truck work on my frame? Want to use the side mounts on the block, not the front 'bird leg' setup. What are my options for side mounts? Also using a A833 3spd OD trans with a Wilwood hydraulic clutch setup. For brakes, I have been told that a vacuum brake booster from a mid sixties Impala with the offset push rod works well in these era trucks. Any advice in these two areas would be greatly appreciated. It seems like everything starts at 1963 as far as conversion parts go. Thanks, Bill
welcome billybones. most inline 6 cylinders use the same motor mounts "perches" as the small blocks use except for the 292 (inline 6). looking from the top of the motor down at the motor mount perches you will notice they are either straight across from eachother or staggered. staggered motor mount perches (passenger side is moved forward about 2 inches and uses a different perch) If the motor mounts are straight across from eachother you should be able to remove the 6 cylinder and re-use everything onto your new small block. Then everything will bolt right in. I moved my engine mounts forward about 1" to give me a little more clearance behind my engine and brings the fan closer to the radiator. As for the transmission, you will need to remove the old transmission cross member and emergency brake cross member and replace them with one for an automatic transmission. you will then need to custom fabricate the emergency brake lines to work with the new transmission mount. I used a tranny cross member from a 70's or 80's chevrolet Blazer and it bolted right in. (drilled new holes in the frame of course) I used a 700r4 transmission so yours might mount a little different however this should get you started. Justin.
Thanks Justin. On my truck though, the six is mounted to the frame in the very front of the block, no side mounts. Then the bellhousing is mounted to the mid-crossmember with no rear crossmember. So I am wondering if I can use later model side mounts on my frame and then will I need to remove the center crossmember for clearance to fit an aluminum bell h.? Don't want to lengthen driveshaft if I don't have to.
Check this out on Van Pershing's Idea Page. http://www.persh.org/pickup/perches.htm There is also a page on 700r4 crossmembers that might be of use in your application. http://www.persh.org/pickup/UnderTheHood.htm#Crossmember You will need to remove the bell housing crossmember, but it's a half hour job with a grinder and cut-off wheel. After you get the motor and trans in the truck, measure for the driveshaft. Getting a driveshaft modified and balanced is about $100 with new U-joints. Val
Thanks for the great links. The pic of the Apache frame is correct I believe. Looks like the same boxed-in frame rails as mine. First time I have seen those odd mounts, must be 60-62. I see the later brackets will work too. No holes in frame to line up with, but should not be too hard. My truck has the X frame, so I don't know if the late model trans crossm will work. May have to make my own.
