I just laid down a deposit on an old grain truck I found in a farmers field. The interior is shot. (mice have been in it) Supposedly it ran up until 4 years ago, when they parked it. (farmer died) Anyway I think its a 1949. It has the Maple Leaf badges on the side of the hood. I got a bunch of numbers off the tags on the door frame. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what the heck this thing is. Thanks! Chevrolet Maple Leaf Model --> 1683 S/N --> 9168300149 Engine --> H20213 Body S/N --> 4 Trim --> 394 Paint --> 931 Max GVW --> 15500 lbs
Here you go. If it ran 40 years ago, it's not to late! Just take a laptop out to your truck, pull up a Nate search on engine tune ups, and let it soak it up. His posts have been known to make dead engines sputter back to life! (WITHOUT starter fluid!) I just spent about 3 hours today going back through all the old posts, printing missed posts to go with all the other info I got. I felt bad knowing how much info Nate and others have given others who have dropped out. Nate has warned us over and over. DON'T TAKE IT APART!!! Just do it as you need it! Your truck has made it this long, just lay your hand on that curve and promise that you'll try your best, and you'll prolly hear the engine slowly try to turn over! These old trucks are that great! Me? I'm takin' mine apart, just so I can say I've loved every inch of my ride after it's been put back together. The best of luck with yours, and welcome. You came to the right place. Use "search" often!
Hey Repo, you wouldn't happen to be one of our friends from the north, would you? Me thinks those #'s are Canadian, eh? I'm pretty sure we cracked the code on some Canook mobiles in some previous posts. We'll come up with something for you. Send some pix when you get some.
Yes, sorry, I forgot to put that part in there. It is a Maple Leaf truck. Info is really hard to find on this!
Maybe this will help http://www.antiquechevytrucks.com/Content/Orginal%20Restoration/advancedesign_main.htm http://www.autogallery.org.ru/gothers.htm Good Luck
The first "9" in your serial # confirms that it is a 1949 truck. By the GVW, i'd say you've a 2 ton or possibly a 2 1/2 ton.
Canadian Chevy Trucks Actually no ~ info is super easy to get as those wily Canuckians have it all archived and there's an 800 number to call in Canadia . Are you north or south of the border ? there's still quite a few Canadian trucks on the U.S. side . If the engine isn't stuck , do a major tune up on it and be pleasantly surprised when the old beast roars into life and drive out of the field under it's own power.... Expect to drop some $ into all new tires and brake hydraulics including all the flex hoses , DO NOT TURN THE BRAKE DRUMS unless it has a pulsating brake pedal after you've done shoes & hydraulics ! .
Hey Repo, Aubrey is the guy's handle who asked about canadian vin #'s earlier on this site. You can do a "search" keyword Aubrey and read his thread or you can call this number and GM Canada should be able to help 1-888-467-6853. From what i've been able to find so far, it is a '49, 2 and 1/2 ton chassis with cab, 177 1/4" WB, if I interpreted the data correctly that i was looking at.
Great info! I'll try calling that number in a day or so. As for the drums, I assume new drums are hard to get? Is that the reason not to turn them? And also, I managed to just turn the fan with both hands and the crank did also turn. So it isn't stuck. I also pulled the dipstick and it is right at the full mark, with no water that I can see. Also peaking into the oil fill hole in valve cover shows no signs of rust.
Pull the plugs! then put some oil, or marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let up sit for a couple of days. You'll be surprised at the results. Man, i'm tickled for you. Let us know just how big it is!
Making It Go (and stop !) Just so plus , the Huck brakes it is equipped with , weren't all that good to begin with and they've prolly been turned a few times allready . thin drums don't disappate heat well and will have sudden brake fade (means pedal goes to floor) right at the worst possible time . Read my past posts about re-awakening that sleeping engine , if you do it carefully , it should run prefectly and not need any rebuilding/overhaul work don't skip any steps , get some oil in those cylinders NOW . -Nate
mice Dont get rid of all the mice, keep a couple of spare ones for the speedo, its all in an old post if you need to research it. One of the other guys could do with one for his truck too. ________ Angelina jolie nude
