On my 49 chevy pickup how does the weatherstrip attach to the bottom of the door? I've bought the new retainer for the bottom of the door. Does the actual door w/s fit in this retainer? or is there a seperate w/s that goes in it. It would be nice if someone had a link to a picture. Does anyone have a template for mounting mirrors on the cowl panel for the same truck? thanks

If I recall correctly the whole weatherstrip doesn't fit in the strip, it clamps down on one lip. I can take a picture but we don't use the retainer strip anymore. The modern adhesives are so much better that the weatherstrip will tear apart before the glue will fail IF DONE CORRECTLY. If you read the little tiny print on a tube of 3M weatherstrip adhesive it says to coat both surfaces and let dry completely, then put a second thin coat on one surface and press together. If the door surface was properly cleaned the strip is there for years and years. The only way to really get a good job on the front edge of the door, between the hinges, is to take the door off and lay it inside up on padded sawhorses. Before removing use a small drill(like 1/8') to drill through the hinge strap and backing so when the door is put back you can use an 1/8 welding rod in the drilled holes and the door will be in the exact same location as before. Look on the inside of the cowl, above the kick panels and you can see mirror mount holes punched through the cowl brace even on trucks with no mirrors. Good luck

    RE: weatherstrip prep

I like to pre clean the painted surface with a clean rag moistened in brake cleaner....
