I am building a canoe trailer to tow behind my '65 stepside. The trailer will be the same color as the truck and have the same wheels. I think it would look GREAT to have the same tail lamp assemblies as the pickup too!! But I'd really like to put on LED lamps. Anyone know how to get LED bulbs that will fit inside the '60-'66 tail lamp assemblies? Also, I need to splice my tail light wires to hook up to a trailer. Using the wiring harness supplied by classic parts, anyone know which wire is "brake" and which is for the turn signals?
Do a Google search for ' 1157 LED ". Lots of places have them. You will need the RED bulbs for taillights. Val
Here is this style but they are kind of spendy, http://www.shiny-hiney.com/trucks.html . And as far as which color does what you'll have to look up the wiring diagram. I would if I had it handy.
If you use the 1157 style replacement bulbs make sure to use a dummy load or the flasher will not operate properly. There isn't enough amperage to heat up the bi-metalic strips (the little dodad that makes the ticking noise). I did find mine at the parts store in the import dress up section but not with light bulbs. Go figure. They run about 12.00 a pair and 10.00 for the dummy load (only one set is required).
That's not necessary if there are incandencent bulbs somewhere on the same circuit, like in the front directional/parking lights. Val
Keep in mind that the LED bulbs will be in a trailer, not the pickup itself. I will keep the incandecent bulbs in the pickup. Will that work/will I have enough power if I splice the trailer lights in?
That should work if the trailer wiring is tied directly into the rear brake/directional/running lights. Once they are connected they become part of the circuit.. Val
Just an update: I ran into Auto Zone today, which is a terrible, terrible sin to commit, but all the stores were closing in 20 minutes and it was only two miles away and I needed to buy some extra hardware for new reverse lights I installed... anywho, imagine my suprise when I find 1157 LED lights there!! I was shocked. Because the trailer is not functional yet, I plugged them into my pickup to see if they worked and they did like a charm. I was even suprised to find that they lit up FASTER that the standard bulbs! I may need to go find a second set for the truck too! Thanks for your help guys!
I installed them on my truck and the flashers stopped working. The LED's do not have enough load by themselfs. They usually sell a dummy load right next to the LED at the parts store. It will fix the load problem.
The flasher rely that on the fuse box might have to be up gradeed to a 6 or 8 light rely it's round in any auto parts store this help take the load off. Get the better type(higher end) if the have it. All so any place that sell trailer stuff.
Oh bye the you might want to check your fuse box to see what type you have the spades on them have two or three set ups but a quick look they all look like each other.
