Hey, I am looking for a working standard transmission for my GMC. Any of ya'll have an idea as to where I can get one for a reasonable price. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris
Chris: I don't have one to offer, but you need to be a little more specific in your hunt. Assuming your '57 GMC is a 100 model (half ton) you are looking for one of three standard transmissions offered. The six cylinder engine would have a GM SM318 transmission if it were a three speed. The eight cylinder engine would have a Borg-Warner T85 transmission if it were a three speed. Both engines used the GM SM420 four speed transmission.
I can't believe I forgot to put that in the message. This truck is a 100 series with a 6 cylinder that came with the 3 speed GM SM318 transmission. Chris
3 Speed Jimmy Tranny Bill ; Isn't this the Saginaw side loader used in Chevys too ? . Or did GMC use a better , Muncie tranny ? . TIA ,
I believe the SM318 was used in many GM vehicles as the base 3 speed manual trans with no synchromesh on low gear. I just don't know that they all used the same input shafts, output shafts, shifter arms, etc. A quick Google search finds references to SM318 transmissions in 60's Buicks, '60s full size Chevy trucks, and Chevy cars as well as the GMC trucks of the '50s.
Thanx ! That's the one I was thinking of ~ extremely simple and easy to repair , sturdy unless you don't have " happy Feets " and so have troubles crunching 1st. gear whilst on the move.....
How much do you want for the tranny and can you tell me how much it would cost to ship it to me. The zip code is 79536. Thanks. Chris
Cheap Freight Will prolly be cheapest to ship by Greyhound , put an address tag in _pencil_ on one ear then triple bag it , double box it and let 'er rip , I always put both addresses inside the flaps of the box too...
Hey Joe, Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I really belong on the other forum, but saw your post. Trans came out of a running truck. The engine it was attached to is now in my truck and the guy did NOT lie, it runs great. I'll take his word that the trans is good also. Since I got it from him for free, I will give it to you for FREE (gotta spread the wealth, ya know). You just have to figure on freight. Heavy sucker. If you want, I'll inquire at Greyhound or weigh it and get some shipping quotes. Since I don't check this forum too often, you can send me a private message for further communication. It is my pleasure to pass it along to you. From what I understand, Greyhound is pretty cheap for these large items. Let me know how you want me to proceed. Andy
