I got the answer to the last one, so I guess it it my turn to sponsor the next contest. This one is open to all but Nate. It'd be too easy for him. Winner of this one has to come up with the next one. I was retrieving a 248" GMC and Hydra-Matic from a '55.2 GMC Burb yesterday when this caught my eye. Anyone know what it is and what is special about it?
Is it some type of oil bath filter that catches dirt before it gets to the filter? I have somthing simular on a farmal tractor I have
It is too obivious to be a regular oil filter, so I'm going to say that it is a filter for the automatic transmission. Funny part about those old Frantz filters is the element. Looked like a roll of toilet paper.
And the winner is ..... Well, the Texas boys figured it out. Maybe they are the most knowledgeable (except for Nate, of course), or maybe they just spend more time on line goofing off and got here first. 47ChevyRod is partially correct in that it is an oil filter. It is actually marked as an "Oil Purifier". This particular engine had no traditional oil filter. The Frantz part in the picture has some 1/8" diameter lines that gets a small amount of the engine oil feed, runs it through the can and dumps it back into the engine. My buddy Ken (whose biggest wrench is 1 1/8", as is mine) hit the nail on the head. This is one of those toilet paper roll filter devices. Now it is up to you guys to come up with your own version of "stump the chumps". Ken: I measured the nut this morning. 1.435" Guess that would make it 1 7/16"
Bill : ...How about those old Diatamacious Earth (?SP?) oil filters , remember them ? . there's an incredible story about a man and his several Porsche 356's bought new and he transferred the filter _and_ the oil to each new car.....
I think so , I was leery of it but old whatsizname swore by it and Porsche N.A. honored the engine warranty on the one that broke the (stupid) fiber cam gear.....
Yep...the good old Frantz. I have part of the instructions on my website for those interested. Hopefully, I'll get to around to finishing them sometime this century. Their is also a company repoping these as well at some absorbent price tag. I hope some bozo didn't remove the engine's original oil filter, as I've commonly seen before, which would be a big mistake.
Say What ?! So then ; The price tag absorbs the dirt on your oil ? or just your money being it has an exorbitant price on it ? Sorry , I simply couldn't resist !
