Finishing up a 49' I need clarification on weatherstrip options...

    New guy here but Seeing as I'm gotta shopping list about a yard long that is gonna be ordered from classic parts here as soon as this question is answered I'll not waste any time...

    First some background,

    The truck is a 49...and I confess.....I've never finished a project vehicle before so I've never had to worry about issues like this (small details)...well there is a first time for everything and I'm a few months out from actually finishing the 10+ year project...(final blow apart, paint and reassembly)

    What I need to know is...

    What do I need for the weatherstripping for the doors?

    I see the requisite glue on rubber seals (is this the way to go?) but I also see a steel lower door seal retainer (do I need that?) and a lower steel windlace retainer (for the lower windlace)...

    I'm assuming I need both (my doors are bare and dont have anything to reference it too)

    Last question...more of a curiosity than anything cause I aint gonna change it...

    the 49 had vent windows in the doors correct?

    mine does not (as I said the doors are bare/no guts and always have been)
    it has the one peice windows...so I'm assuming I need the 51-54 door glass channel guides correct?

    Basically if you definitavly know the parts I need to get from classic parts I'm all ears...

    Seeing as I just found this place and its all about the trucks I've been working on for 15 years I'll be a regular round these parts

    (and uh.....hurry up with the answer I gotta get this order in before the money gets used on something usefull....like food...)

    Hi Salty, You need every thing you listed. You will need the window channels for 47-50. If your truck is a 49 than it dident have vent windows. The glue-on seals work good, best to put the seal on the door before on the truck. Chris

    AZ,

    Care to expound? I'm not quite followin ya...I thought the seals were to be just mounted on the door?

    Or do I need something I dont have listed?

    As far as the channels...any ya'll gotta link for those particular channels....cause I musta missed em on C.P.'s site

    You have to use a contact type glue(3M). You have to put the glue on the door and also on the seal, then let the tack up. It takes about 12 feet of weatherstrip to go around the door so it is alot easer and you can do a much better job installing it with the doors off. CP sells the door channel kits for all these trucks. Chris

    Hey Salty, welcome to the forum. Like AZ said, '47-50 did not have vent windows. Vent windows on AD's came out in '51. Interesting note, '51 was the last year for pull down door handles, first year for vent windows. Kinda makes the '51 unique.

    And remember, reproduction parts are just that! Reproduction! No matter how good the company is that sells them, they are repop, and may not fit exactly the way the originals did. Any time that you can spend a little extra time to rework original stuff, do it. You'll be happier in the long run.

    Salty - welcome to the forum, I'm not new to the talk show, but I ain't been round much lately.

    The truth and nothing but the truth has been told thus far. BUT, them repop rubbers ain't as quality as the original (at least in my opp).

    They do fit as designed, but mine seem to be too thick, yep, the door does shut but man she's tight. When all is adjusted correctly there is a lot of pressure from the new gaskets.

    PUT the door on first, adjust to fit... mark everything and then take er back off and put the gaskets on.

    You will find that when you put the doors back on that you will have to tweek it a little more, but take it from the dirty t-shirt man, you CAN'T get them there rubber thingies on right ifin ya try to put em on with the doors installed:eek:

    I remember a great weekend in Gallitin, Tx bitching about repops and having "Muscles" come in and making it fit. How IS your son doing?:D

    Working all night everynight, spendin his quality kodiak moments with his little darlin, and doin the collage thing during the day. Sleeps about 4 hours each morning... wheeeeew I'm tired just thinkin about it.

    Yep, I think I remember when I was that age, or do I :eek:

    Man it feels good to be back with friends, where did I loose sight?

    I'm thinkin I came down hard off that 53, harder than I realized, but it is great to hear from OLD friends, scuze the pun :D

    It is MUCH easier to put the weather stripping on with the door off. Here is a tip: read the directions on the tube of 3M weather strip glue. It says to put a light coat on both the door and the rubber, let dry, and then put a SECOND coat on EITHER the door or rubber and press together. I like to wipe the door surface and the side of the rubber that gets the cement with a damp lacquer thinner rag to clean off any contaminate. Must use caution and a quick wipe on painted surface or it's bad news. If done this way you won't need clothes pins or tape to hold it while it dries. Lastly, unless your truck is yellow use the black cement.

    Repop Rubber

    Welcome Salty ! (I'm told I'm a salty old cuss many times)

    Be aware than most repop rubber sold by thparts vendors is worthless made in China crap that doesn;t fit and then rots away in less than a year , so what's a fella to do ?

    Simple : buy ALL your rubber bits from Steele Rubber Products , thier OnLine catalog is kinda strange but do-able if you have patience . plus they'll send you a paper catalog with your order .

    Thier rubber is American made and fits , then it lasts . of course this co$t$ a bit more but not much .

    Yep I know...

    If I had the parts to rework I would rather do that....everything here in the salt belt is rotted or rusted....

    Literally the only thing I have is the door and hinges and the window frames...therefore I gotta dig up those small parts that pain us so...

    I'll check into steele I've heard good things about em but kinda was gonna be lazy and order everything from one place...that may not be the best idea I see...
