    A Long Time Ago.....

When I was in High School (bell bottoms and hair to my waist) my best buddy's Moms drove a 1966 Caddy , it was gold in color and nearly new...

That's an impressive ride you have there , I like it .

Tailgater I didn't mean to come off as being offended cause I'm not I was simply trying to say that everyone has different styles. I personally like when I go to car shows and see all the different styles of cars cause it would be really boring if they all the care looked the exact same.

vwnate1 its not my caddy but I wish that it was. I just posted up pics of it to show one of the projects that is being done at the shop that is going to be building my frame.

No offense taken. Sometimes it is hard to determine the feelings behind the words when you are emailing. I think you and I are in total agreement about this. Individuality is the key.

Wow, this brings back memories. It is a long road but well worth it. Take tons of pictures and put them in the gallery for all of us so we can live vicariously through you. Can't wait to see the kind of work that guy will do on your frame.

The cab had little rust considering that its been sitting for about 30 yrs. I'm sure I will find more rust after it gets blasted but for now about all that I have found is there is a 2 in. dia. rust hole on passenger side cab corner. The front floor has quite a bit of rust but thats ok cause I will have to add a tranny tunnel anyways so I will just remedy it with sheet metaling the rest of the floor.

I do have one question for you guys though. The truck was a 1 ton so it looks to me that the wheel openings are bigger for these front fenders (haven't had a chance to compare with 1/2 ton fenders yet). Are there any other differences I should know about with using the front end that came on the truck for way i'm going to be using them? I don't want to spend the money getting them sandblasted if I need to just use 1/2 ton fenders but I read that I will need to have the front end bolted on to get cab located right on the frame.

    Yates,
If it is truly a 1 ton then the cab, including the fenders are the same as a 1/2 and 3/4. However, there are signs that make it look like a 1 1/2 ton to me. For instance, I have never seen that kind of front bumper on anything but a 1 1/2 ton. Also, the grille on a 1 1/2 ton is bigger than the grille on the others. So, if it is a 1 ton, no sweat. But I think it bears a little more research to make sure. Either way, the cab proper should be the same size regardless.

Don't friggin' worry- You got a frame man like what you have, who CARES what's up with the fenders? You're not going stock look anyway with big wheels like what you posted, so why worry? Look at flipper's s---. He's got an "outside the box" look- take his lead and make us proud, okay? Put some good tunes on, have an adult beverage, and look at the possibilities. I see a BUNCH! What a sled you could have... Flat bed?

At any rate- have fun. We're happy you saved a beast!

I'm still learning about these trucks so you may be right gator. I will probably need 1/2 ton fenders and grille to make it look proper?

Do you have the door post ID plate?

Check to see if you have that. It should reveal to you what it is. This link will help you if you have the ID # www.stovebolt.com/techtips/series.htm

So looked up the plate and it is a 1.5 ton. Does anyone know the differences of the .5 - 1 ton to the 1.5 ton front clip?

    Won't work.

I do believe the 1.5 is bigger than the .5. Seriously, Yates, you can still build this, it'll just mean measuring and hunting. You're talking about building a new frame, so it doesn't matter. You could flatbed it, build a bed with fenders that have been punched out a couple of inches and build running boards to match... or, measure width and distance between hubs, and go shopping for that doner frame.

To the best of my knowledge (having done a 1 ton), the cab, doors and hood are the same as the smaller trucks. The difference comes in the fenders and grill because the truck sits higher and the fenders and grill are longer top to bottom to compensate. I cannot swear about the hood but I am about 90% sure. As far as the splashpan between the grill and the front bumper, I don't know. Also, as far as the innards around the radiator and stuff, I can't help. If you can take measurements on your truck pieces and post them I am sure that we can take like measurements on our rigs and compare. Just make sure you tell/show exactly where you measured so we can be accurate. For instance, if you measure from the bottom of the headlight hole to the bottom of the fender and give us that, it should tell you exactly how much diff there is. Do you think it is worth a try? I will be glad to help.

I will try to get some measurements on different places of the front end so we can compare. I really want to use the 1.5 ton fenders since they have a larger wheel opening but for this truck to look right I need this front end to fit up with the .5 ton running boards. I think my old boss has a .5 ton fender that he is not using do maybe I can do a little comparing there. Another problem is I have not seen any places offering grilles, fenders, hoods, etc. for the 1.5 ton.

    Cab is the same .

Splash pan is different and extremely hard to find , that's prolly why I have one lying 'round .

Fenders and core support different too .

Hood I dunno , easy to measure tho'

I guess I will just wait and get my frame done then put the cab on and try that front end and see if its too big. It will be fun I guess .

    Speaking of working on frames....

I worked on mine the past two days and hopefully I'll see it move up and down on its own tommorrow. I finally got the front bag cups in this week so I put the front bags in. I had to box in the frame so it would give me a mounting point for the air tank. I had to make a few other brackets so the manifold valve block would bolt on and the compressor I sunk it in the frame rails. I've got to do a little wiring tommorow to make sure all is good. Then take all the wiring back out so I can drop the engine and tranny in. Hopefully I'll get it all done. If not then there is always next weekend. Here's a few pics of what I've done so far.
