tappets

    how do you set the tappets on a (sbc . 400) ive worked on 4cylinders over the years but not v8 and i dont want to set them with the motor ticking over i want to keep my arms were they are? :confused

    if you are working on a chevy the best way to adjust them is with the engine running. Remove valve cover and w/ motor running back off the adjuster nut, 5/8 , you will hear the clatter get louder, then turn back clockwise until noise stops. Give another 1/4 to 1/2 turn more after noise stops to set plugger depth. This will make the motor miss for a minute, it should return to normal quickly. Repeat this with all rocker arms.
