Hey guys I've only posted here a couple of times and I know you guys are the right people to come to for help. I have a 52 with a 216 and I just replaced the cap, rotor, points, condenser, coil, plug wires and plugs. I got the timing dead set on the ball bearing, but the truck wasn't running right after set. Then all of a sudden the truck will crank over but won't fire. Checked the points gap, gap is fine, rotated the engine by hand and still gap was fine. Checked carb, good stream of gas flow. Now where do I go from here, help help help.
Possible carb problem? What kind of carby are you running? Check for blockages, improper settings etc. within the carby. I'm just "priming" Nate, (get it, priming) to give you step by step instructions. Don't get frustrated, just kick back, grab a cold one, admire your work and wait for someone to give you some good advice!
Thanks for the reply Ken. I'm running a Rochester 1 barrel. I checked for gas flow and it checks out fine. Truck was running and decided to do a tuneup because the truck has not ran great since I've owned it. It is getting fuel. Seems to be all in the distributor area my best guess but then again that's why it's not running right. Robert
Gremlins! Those little bastards! My favorite Bugs Bunny cartoon/propaganda film from the '40s. You're a victim of them!! Have you had the dizzy out lately? Could it be 180 degrees out? Is it running at all? I'm sorry that i'm full of questions tonight instead of answers! I'm just trying to troubleshoot for those who know more than me!
Check and see if it is firing at the plug side of one of the plug wires..... if it's not, check to be sure you have power to the coil ...if that checks okay, double check the coil wire from the coil to the distributor to be sure it is making good connection at both ends...... Good Luck, SeAMuNkY
Some things (dumb) that I have done. Check that you have the fireing order right. I put new plug wires on and did not get the order right. It sure will not run if you don't have that right. Another thing is are you sure you have the switch on? My buddy "the real mechanic" was helping one time, and the engine would not start. I had jumped in and was pushing the starter button for all it was worth. Switch off, and it will not run as well. I know these are simple things but the human mind is our problem sometimes.
Tuneup You must be more specific about ' not running right ' ~ stalls , idles rough , chugs when you try to accellerate ? backfires through the carby or after fires out the exhaust? . did you adjust the valves yet (99 % of them are tight) ? . Did you grab the dizzy shaft and see if it moves sideways (bad) ? . Maybe it's just two plug wires are reversed , easy to do . I usually leave the rotor sitting on the rockerbox or the air cleaner where I don't see it but anyone watching me does......
I tuned up the 53...the points pack I got did not have the spring in it so I didn't know to use it. Would idle fine, but wouldn't rev up....
Hey Robert Didja ever get this squared away ? . If not , give an off list ping the second week in January and maybe I can be of some help ~ I'm getting better bit by bit so mayhap I can take a look at your Troca .
Won't start ... hmmmmmmmmmmmm Don't know if you ever got your 53 running but if all of the above did not work you might just want to check and make sure your condensor is properly grounded. Sounds nuts, but other than what everyone else wrote this is about the only other thing I could think of! So what was the answer?
