    :confused:........BUT I got the timing mark dead on and the truck idles great but doesn't run well taking off. What I've noticed from reading other posts about the rotor cap pointing to the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap, mine points at #6 when I turn the engine by hand, lined up the timing mark, my rotor cap points at #6. I never removed a distributor before so I want to find out from you all what steps should I take to get this corrected and running right.
    As always thanks for your response and advice

    If it's idling then the timing can't be too far out. Mark up where it is now - then no matter how much you twist the dizzy to get it running better you can always go back and start again if you loose it altogether.

    When you say it idles but doesn't run well, you have the vacuum advance line plugged and it doesn't leak right?

    Just realized, when I said 'plugged' I really meant connected - dizzy to carb.

    Dizzy Position

    Robert ;

    The dizzy spins at 1/2 the speed of the engine so turn the crankshaft by hand , one 360° revolution and see if the rotor button isn't now properly lined up .

    If you either take the rockerbox off or have the oil filler cap in the front , look at the second valve as you're turning the crankshaft and the Ball Bearing (Timing Mark) is coming up , this valve should be closing if the engine is coming up to cylinder # 1's firing position.

    I hope this makes sense , print it out and take out to the garage with you
    turn the engine to ball & pointer , then turn it once more and you'll see the valve only closes on one turn's position .

    BTW : the vacuum advance line must be connected to the base of the carby , not the intake manifold and there must not be any vacuum in it @ idle .

    Keep at it , you're almost there ! .

    Thanks Mel And Nate wil give it a shot.
    plus I think will give it a hot valve adj should not hurt,
    was only able to give cold adj when replaced a bent push rod some time back.I know in other post you guys say it makes a world of difference.
    again thanks for all the help.

    HOT Valve Adjustment

    Yes , it is very important to go back and re - check all the valve gaps now that you've got it running as they'll usually close up again .

    WHAT NATE SAID! Since you haven't pull it out, it should be much easier!! Sounds like it may have the dizzy rotated a little and might be able to adjust things just by rotating the dizzy. BOL
