If I change a 216 to a 235 motor in my truck, what parts will I need to change? Will the flywheel ,Starter,intake/exhaust manifold, bellhousing and carb need to be changed ? Thanks Bryan
Ooh, ooh, pick me, pick me! Having learned the hard way, the most critical thing is: Short shaft water pump with the correct pulley. If you don't have that, all bets are off! The pulley needs to be about 2" plus or minus from the center of the belt groove to the front end of the pulley. Fan belt needs to be 3/8" to match the harmonic balancer on the 235. Don't ask me how I know this stuff, just trust me. Otherwise, everything else is just a bolt on!
Well ; Sort of : the intake manifold is different and if you try to use a 216 intake , you're almost gauranteed to have vacuum leaks and wierd idling problems . You'll need to swap the front plate with engine mount from the 216 to the 235 engne . Clutch & flywheel are interchangable but , there's a different tooth count between 6 and 12 volts so if you're using a late 235 engine you may need to swap the old flywheel off the 216 if you're still running a 6 volt system . If your truck is allready 12 volts, use the flywheel that has the larger diameter clutch . Point being : flywheel and starter MUST be a matched pair . Use the truck's current bellhousing as it has the rear motor mounts .
