I have a a 1952 GMC 1/2 ton that needs a new gasket for the main oil seal. Problem is that the engine got changed sometime before I got the truck although I thought it was the original. GMC sent me this rope seal which was not the right one, and even thought I have the engine number LA0226993, I can't locate a place to get this seal. Does anyone know a place I can look to find this?

    Thanks

    Determining GMC Engine

O.K. , look under the hood , at the _right_ side of the engine , behind the distributor and slightly below , there's a machined flat pad that'll have the engine serial number _stamped_ into it , once you scrape all the grease & yuk off it ~ the first THREE digits will tell you what displacement the engine is .

Posting the entire serial number here will allow one of the parts book guys to research the model and year engine you have , they're often changed and occasionally there's a Chevy engine in there , always if you have a Canadian built GMC .

Once you find the correct engine size , I'll look in my gasket book for the correct part number .

    OBTW : WELCOME ! ;)

I did post the number on the engine block, it was LA0226993. How can I now find out what type of engine this is?

    Small Picture But ,

That sure looks like a dressed up 235 Chevy engine to me .

If so , It'll take a common Rope Seal , when I get beck next week I'll look up the Victor / NAPA part number for you , it's entirely possible both 235 & GMC engines use Rope Seals .

Was your truck made in Canada perchance (build info on VIN tag on driver's doorpost) ? if it was , it'll have a 235 in it , Canadian GMC's use Chevy 235's . those wily Canuckians)

    Obtw :

    I think it looks GREAT ! .

I like the GMC typ oil filler cap built into the Road Draft Tube , I thought your Jimmy engine should have an oil filter on the right side near the oil filler..? .

Nate, GMC sent us a rope seal but that was not the part and my repair guy has no idea what it is. I know NOTHING about this truck, got it on ebay as just an extra to tool around my island with and take things down to my boat. Figured it would be a cool novel truck to have. The seal that came off it was a rubber one not a rope one that is why we are having problems.

As far as the oil filter, I have not a clue. If this was a Porsche, I could tell you everything about it. =0) ptruck2.jpg

    Seal Identification

    Well ;

If it's a rubber seal with a metal rod backing , it'll have a part number moulded into it and this should be listed in the Bower BCA bearing & seal master catalog.....

You might need a magnifying glass to read the part number....
