I am going to start doing some body work on my 62 and want to sand to bare metal or use a paint remover then find all the small areas that need work. I bought a cheap spray gun so i can primmer after i do this. Im going to do this in small section starting with the bed. My question is what should i do i know they sell some primmer fill should i buy that and spray that first then primmer on top of that. and doses anyone know what kind of primmer would work best and were i can get it at. Please help me this will be my first project.
you can remove paint easy at home with a electric die grinder and a axial rotating wire brush on it.Its cheap and pretty fast too.Next step is to primer(rust protect) the bare metal, followed by smoothing out any imperfections with body filler. Then you use the spray filler which can be easy sanded for a scratch free, even surface-ready for paint Its a good idea to stick with one brand for all materials you use-this ensures that there is no surprise (lift off,cracks,shrinking..)when everything is dry.If at all possible use professional material/paint/filler/thinner-they give best results.Rattle can stuff is 2.choice..
BTW.: where do your wheels come from? Like them a lot-but cant remember where I have seen them before...
Duplicolor sells a 3 part premixed paint system, primer, color and clear. Just pour into the gun and spray, no thinning required. They sell it at the local parts store. Metal prep is very important. Use a metal prep to wipe down the metal before filler or paint. No more than 1/4" of body filler or it could crack and fall apart down the road. When sanding start with a course paper and work down to a finer paper. Sand filler in an X patern. Up and down, side to side and circles will show through to the paint.
Thank you drabo and oldcarsnbikes for your feedback they will be very useful to me. Oldccarsnbikes as for the rims i dont know got them with the truck.
If those primed spots will be there a while, you will want to seal them. Priming does not prevent moisture from reaching metal until it is sealed. ( that is usually a base-coat/clear-coat thing) You can seal the primer with a shot of semi-gloss clear. Lots of guys do it to get that seude look on their ride. Val
