Hey guys I need some help. I called around to find a power steering unit and found a complete unit for 200 is that good but they wouldnt tell me the year of the unit all they said was it was mid 70s unit and that i would need to modifiy and weld this to my truck. Is there an easy way to do this and what year of unit came i use.
I think it would be easier for you to try find a bracket that would mount than wield it on,that could be very DANGERIOUS,you could even make a bracket, mid 70s should work on your model. thanks 283 man
Rez power steering bracket is what you need. I think Classic Parts our host sells them. Any 2 wd power steering gear from 70 something to 87 will work. I don't know about welding it to the frame. Jeremy.
You need a Saginaw 700 series Steering box to use the REZ adapter. Like this If you can't use the REZ adapter, DON'T DO IT !! Like the folks above said, it ain't safe ! Here is a link to an article about installing the REZ adapter. http://www.customclassictrucks.com/techarticles/60_66_chevy_gmc_power_steering_retrofit/index.html Val
Thanks Thanks for all your help but one more thing how or does anyone have the number to rez and how much is the bracket. Where can i find a good price for the saginaw 700 series steering box dalvalentine
http://www.classicparts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=76-979 This is the link to the one Classic Parts sell. They also sell the steering as well, but you could get one in town too. Jeremy
Do not get talked into not using the steering box bracket. It is need to stiffen the frame. Not using this could cause the frame to crack from the stress of the steering box. I'm sure our host has this item or CPP, Brothers, LMC ect. Now I like to save a nickle where I can. I got my hoses at the local parts store. I used my calibrated eye to find the right one. Okay not really I bought a few diffrent ones until I found the right one and then returned the rest. The power steering pump was also bought at the parts store. I happened to have an old leakey on so I didn't have to pay a core charge.
IF possible, get the pump AND steering box from the same vehicle. Trying to mix-n-match years will result in difficulty in getting hoses to fit. Val
Thanks guys so im going to buy the bracket from this site then a mid 70s power steering unit from a local salvage yard. That should be it right
Try also to select a truck that has the correct pump mounting brackets and grab those too. Match the motor you have in there now if possible. If you have an inline six, all I can say is good luck ! Like I said before, grab everything you can in the wrecking yard, BUT, buy new hoses for the pump. Val
I'm not sure 1960 -1966 trucks but is your gear box mounted on the in side of the frame. As the 1973 -1987 gear boxes are mounted on the out side frame rail. all most all 73-87 cars mount on the in side frame rail. GM trucks 73-79 and some 80 have the old nut flair hose ends for the high pressure side. 1980 was the switch over year to mectric nut and the bubble flair and O-ring end.1980-87 all have the pre said set up un less some one changed it. For the GM car from 1982 or 1883 most changed to the mectric around then.Oh the power sterring pump would be mectric fitting would be same time frame as said. So as said buy others the pump and gearbox must be a match for the hose or you will have to get made up hose with to different ends. witch some times leak a little because of the high pressure. The person has to be good at this and have a good press for the fitting. Because the line are so short twist hook up so close does not help.
Val, It's the Saginaw 800 steering box isn't it? Might be good to get the rag joint with it too... if only for tempoary use.
