Really don't think the AD needs power steering if everything is not binding, is adjusted right and greased regularly, BUT, if one does want it then the mid 80's Toyota 4wd pickup unit is the way to go. It is smaller than the AD factory unit (allows V8 without moving) and mounts on top of the frame with a super simple bracket that aligns with the steering column perfectly, and most important, it positions the drag link in the exact same angle and plane as the factory. Has no hoses hanging down like the tie rod assist set up. We put 6 degree caster shims in after it was installed and a pressure reduction valve from Speedway into the p/s pump. If it had a sliding back glass I think you could pull out the throttle, jump in the back and play poker it tracks so straight. I think they are offering kits to do this now but we used a salvage yard box ($225) and fabbed up the bracket, pitman arm, drag link, and steering shaft. Borgenson makes a Toyota to 3/4 DD steering shaft joint--about $75. Sorry no pics this go around but have another one coming in soon.
Evan, do they make that steering box in a manual version? I was thinking about something like this for simplicity. Also, do you think it could work with lowered straight axle? Just gathering info for possible options.....Mike
Toyota Power steering in AD I've used the Toyo power box in several of my FoMoCo trucks and can verify that it is a great, bulletproof conversion that eliminates some of the problems you incounter with the GM conversion. Primarily, as was mentioned, the box mounts in the original position and doesn't put a bunch of stress on the outer horns of the AD frame. The Saginaw pump is a proven unit and the only real hassle is springing for a 2 groove harmonic balancer, if you want to run your alternator, a/c compressor, and the power steering pump. I've got some pics of the box mount bracket in my GM albums. BTW...the box you want is from a mid-80's Toyo 4wd with the box mounted IN FRONT of the front cross member. Although the stock Chevy box does a good job, even with some beefy rubber up front, the Toyota P/S conversion gives you fingertip control of your truck. Dave
