The only real thing missing from my truck when I found it was the aircleaner, so I've been looking around for an old one that would fit. Found this one on e-pay and just put it on the truck. I was told it came from a mid 40's truck. I was expecting a place to put oil, but I dont see how it comes apart Also, the air filter is falling apart and with metal shavings falling off, no way I could use it as is. The element is 6.5" ID X 7.25" OD and 1.5" tall. Does it take oil? Any idea where I can find a replacement element? Lots of questions for a simple old aircleaner, but it does look a lot better than the chrome thing I bought to start with Thanks!!!
not sure steve, but it sure looks like it should take oil, huh? the top doesn't pop off of there when you undo the wingnut? also, check the archives under "air cleaner"- i think nate had some sage advise about soaking in simple green and running atf in 'em. jon
What You Have There.... ...Is the DeLuxe DRY air filter with the noise reducing empty chambers... Chevs Of The 40's sells the wire mesh part you're missing , soak it in some heavy oil then let drip dry and install . Keep looking on E-Pay under carby , Rochester etc. untill you find a nasty old carby with nifty Oil Bath air filter attached to it for $10.00 and buy it , clean up and re-paint , add the ' Just So ' AC decals from Chevy Duty and it'll make you smile every time you pop the hood to top up the oil . Be aware that when you mis - time your engine and it backfires , ALL the oil will splatter out all over your squeaky clean engine and compartment..... BTW : NEVER bead blast an air filter clean ! you must wire brush it clean for painting so no abrasives get inside ! . USE ATF instead of oil and it'll be self - cleaning , really ~ try it and see .
Air Filter Nate, thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! I did find it on Chevs of the 40's (a new website for me) and will call them tomorrow to make sure the dimensions are the same. I'll also keep looking for an oil bath just to have some fun
