4 barrel carb. will increase your horse power on your 283,but you will use more gas and your gas milage goes down with 4 barrel personally I swiched to a 4 barrel carb. on my new 283 and Ill never go back to a 2 barrel :D..

If you go with a good quadrajet and keep your foot out of it............you should get better mileage than the larger primary 2bbl. Keep in mind your cam lobes are for a 2bbl too. You will get a boost in performance still.

That's how it worked for me too. MPG actually increased with a 4 barrel. But,, I'm no kid either.. The only time the secondaries kicked in was getting on the freeway...

I have a heavy foot most of the time 2BBL carb suck gas and wast gas copared to a 4BBL carb as long as you keep on the primary side. You can play with the linkage to open the 4 BBL's at a higher rpm ( a more floored peddle ) if your want try a little hard to help save gas. As said look at the size of the primary on the two carbs see how small the 4BBL primary are . The thing about the 2BBL it will keep throwing gas even when it not burning it will try to give more then needs at full floored.
I seem $20. a week my self over 2BBL even with a heavy foot.
I would never use a 2BBL carb again.
