I will be replacing the cab sometime next week (with fingers crossed) and would like to do something with the underside to fortify it against rust and noise. I’ve thought about bedliner but don’t know how hard that would be to apply; I don’t have an air compressor so it would have to be applied via a brush. Is there a better treatment than bedliner? Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can do? Also, any warnings/suggestions as I fit the cab back on? _________________________
Be very careful when applying any kind of rubberized coating. It is a must to prepare the old surface thoroughly to ensure that a proper bond is established. If not, the rubberized coating will crack and separate, creating places that will hold moisture and ultimately rot out all of your hard work.
Paint on a good rust encapsulator first. It will stop rust and convert any that s already there. You can use Hurcules bed liner, found at Pep boys, which is designed as a roll on. Bedliners seal the floor, and provide great sound deadening. You can also use it under fenders, running boards, etc.
I have heard good things about the Hercules bed liner. All my sheet metal has been blasted and primed. Do I just need to spray on the rust encapsulator then the Hercules? Also I don't think a roller will work on my cab underside. Can I use a brush with it?
Good questions, Big Chevy. This is an interesting thread! I will be rolling my cab over on its backside this spring to do the underside also. I was thinking of primer and rattle can paint, but the sound deadening aspect of this is intriguing also...
