starter troubles

    i am running the stock starter setup on my 64 c10 4-speed. recently the starter bolts loosened up and the bottom ear of the bellhousing wherer the starter bolts thread into. the engine is a small block fromthe mid to late seventies. I noticed that there is a flay flange on th block above the starter. My question is is there a starter made that blots into the holes in that flange? or should i try to find another bellhousing. any help you guys can give me would be great.

    I don't know much about manual set-ups but automatic's bolt to the engine block. Are you trying to say that the threads are stripped? Or they are just backing out?

    If they are stripped you can tap the threads with the next size tap. I would reccomend a metric tap just because you will be removing the least amount of material.

    If they are backing out your first step is to make sure the threads are clean. I like to use brake cleaner and a Q-tip. Squirt a little cleaner into the hole and use the q-tip to clean it out. After this if you have a compressor blow out ant remaining junk with a little air. Most improtantly don't forget some goggles for the eyes. Reinstall the starter. Use some blue thread locker. If they still back out install a lock washer.

    the threaded hole on the bellhousing actually broke. if what you say is true about bolting the starters to the block then i should be able to use a starter for an automatic as long as i have the right right number of teeth on my flywheel.

    If you have a standard shift an automatic starter won't fit. As a temporary fix you can try to JB Weld the broken piece if you still have it. Otherwise, I think the bell housing will need to be replaced.
    If that's the case, save yourself some time by replacing the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing too. Resurfacing the flywheel is also a good idea. It's going to be apart anyway, so now would be a good time to do it.

    You can not use the automatic holes-your starter has 3 bolts on a 4-speed.If the middle hole broke,you might be able to bolt the starter motor on tight with just the upper and the lower bolt.If not,you can have the bellhousing welded,I know,it's cast iron,but it's no big deal for a good welder.Even if the broken piece is lost,you can cut a similar piece out of any other cast iron bellhousing or engine,weld it on,drill and tap it and you're ready to go.No need to throw away a rare piece like a manual bellhousing for a V 8.
    I wish I had access to all those nice ,rare (over here),pick up and classic parts you have in the USA.If I find them over the internet,shipping and tax kills my dreams.Save a part-repair it!;)
