When I first bought my truck I searched all over for an online parts manual in vain. Finaly a factory assembly manual fell into my hands granting me wisdom in the ways of the truck, with its detailed schematics and diagrams yet, was hindered by its uniteligable parts numbers and sloppy index. Now I can create anything with flash programs and web pages. Now I want to scan my parts book and make all the parts listed display information such as cost, advice, and other neccesities when a user clicks on them. My question is can I do this without any legal infingments. Ive contacted GM and no one has any anwsers. Ive also noticed that there is a lot of companys selling chevrolet manual but most of them are before 1960 is this a cutoff date on the restrictions or coincidence I would really appreciate the help
I'm no lawyer, but,,, look on the publication in question. GM granted them the right to publish it. You must get the publishers to agree to the use you have planned. Look for the fatal words on the manual " copyright etc etc, must not be reprinted unless by explicit approvel of the publisher...." ya-da ya-da ya-da....
Ive looked all over but the only writing about copyrights is "Reprinted with permission of General motors Corporation". Ive phoned them but they have no idea about reprinting
The way the copyright law is as follows: If the manual is a continuous print, then you may not copy it without permission. If the manual is no longer in print, which is the case with the original manual. It may be copied and used, but may not be sold under any circumstances. Same thing goes for items like sheet music, maps, etc. DrMike
