    Hi folks,

I would appreciate a little help on this, and have read through most of, if not all of the carb threads without satisfaction. Here is my issue. I recently replaced my original Rochester carb with a rebuild unit from Classic. My truck runs very rich, fouling plugs. With the choke out 1/2 inch to get it started it runs really rich, and in when the choke is in, the truck stalls when giving it gas from a stop. With the choke in, what should the position of the choke butterfly be? The mixture screw is between 1.5 and 2.5 turns. What gives?

    Thanks,
    Larry

    Carb problem

    Larry,

I replied once but it seems to have been lost. First, why did you replace the carb? What was wrong with it? Second, just because its new/rebuilt out of the box doesn't mean you always can bolt it on and drive away trouble free. Some of the things to check are fuel pressure (might be to high), float level height, choke plate (it should be fully open when the choke knob is in.) I’m in Newnan and would like to see your truck.

    Carby (not) Fun

    Larry ;

The carby is always the very last thing one touches in the cycle of making it run sweet .

Valve adjust then points gap / dwell followed by correct ignition timing , then ensure you have proper spark plug gaps , they must be at least .035" ~ NEVER trust the plug gap out of the box .

Is the coil the correct one ? is the truck 6 or 12 volts as I see lots of wrong coils .

All that done ? good ~ now check the float level as it's very easy to catch the float on the edge of the gasket as you're assembling the air horn , this causes the float height adjustment to be too high and causes rich running . flooding & fouling of spark plugs .

Lastly , if there's no fuel filter you MUST add one ! back in the day , Gasoline companies were very good about selling clean gas but to-day most fuel is _filthy_ and the Rochester Series 'B' carby is extremely sensative to tiny bits of dirt or rust, these will lodge in the float needle valve and cause flooding , fouling of the spark plugs too . the fuel filter needs to be located immediately before the carby .

    Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the information. Prior to removing the leaking carb, my truck, 6 volt ran sweetly. The valves are adjusted, the plugs are gapped, and there's a new fuel filter. Before I installed the carb, I made sure that the float level was 1-3/4" but will check it again. I live in Marietta and would enjoy meeting you 5034ton and let you see my truck. I have the original carb and rebuilt it, but it was leaking. I'm tempted to reinstall it. This is no fun not having a truck that doesn't run like it should. I love driving it, and can't stand when it wants to stay in the garage. What do you have?

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks again!!!

Marietta is a nice place. Been going to the Atlanta/Marietta area two to four times per year since 1988. Can you guess why?

    Best bet Larry

Is to pop the old carby on as - is and see if runs O.K. , if so the new carby has a paroblem , could be any of many things , wrong main jet , sticky power valve and on and on.....

    Carb

    Larry,
I have a 1950 3600 three holer. Drove it to work exactly once (Atlanta rush hour), half gave me a thumbs up the others the finger because I wasn't going fast enough. So now its on the rotisserie stripped down to nothing and working the rust out. Working towards a non stock daily driver. Something a little more road worthy. All I lack is finishing up. I will send a PM to set up a look at your truck. Is the choke plate opening all the way?
