well, no one has bought my 64 c10 yet and i finally have a lead on a cheap enough parts truck with what looks to be a good cab and fenders etc... so i am going to check it out and if they accept my offer and its in good enough shape im going to buy it and keep my truck. the question i have is how hard is it to swap cabs? and what would you recomend removing to paint it? i already know the basics like the seat, gauge cluster and switches, gas tank etc.. but anything else that would make it look nicer. truck with the cab is the totaly wrong color so id like to repaint it before putting it on. and also how hard will it be to swap? im sure the wiring on the new truck will be better then whats on mine so plan to swap that over as well and am hoping it has the origonal steering column etc.. still in it as mine was swapped for a tilt and i dont like it at all. i want a more origonal look. my truck already has front wheel discs and power steering etc.. from a 74 c10 and als othe sbc 400 4 barrel as well. its 5 lug al around and ill swap the power glide to a th375 i have while the old busted cab is off. im wanting this truck to look nice but dont have the cash for a full resto or anything. im only 26 and have 2 supras that im not finished with as well. any help with info for this swap over would be greatly apreciated. also, how hard is it to remove the windshield and rear window on the small rear window cabs? thinkiing of doing that for paint if it isnt too hard. both cabs are small rear window cabs.
Cab swaps are pretty straight forward unless it is a 60-63 cab. But even then it isn't too bad. The 64-66 cabs will swap straight across. The wiring harness under the dash is essentially plug-n-play. If the doner is a 60-63 some conversion of cab mounts and the wiring harness will be needed. Getting the windows out is achieved by using a sharp razor knife and cutting through the weather seal from INSIDE the cab. Have a friend outside to assist while you press out on the glass. Installation of the glass back in the cab is best done by a professional glass installer. Not one of those CHAIN glass shops, one that specializes in older glass installation. Val
thanks. both are 64's so no worries there. i dont like the 60-63 cabs. i think the wrap around windshield is ugly. lol. il basiclly be swapping the whole body minus the bed to my truck. if i get lucky and sell my weber dcoe's i may go ahead and buy the paint and paint the whole thing while it is apart. my uncle is a painter so the labor will be cheap for it to be painted. ill just have to do all the prep which im used to doing from helping him out from time to time.
Wait ! It's your future !! I see..... a number of posts in this thread placing your sanity in question !!! If it were me ?? I'd paint the whole she-bang. Just painting the cab will call attention to the paint on the rest of the truck that won't look nearly as nice. Good luck on the cab swap... Val
I love ALL models all 1960-1966 chevy/gmc wrap around windshieds are cool tooits like the old Diana Ross song "WE ARE FAMILY"..
when i said paint it while it is apart i meant the whole truck. i want to do the light blue with white top of the cab 2 tone and do the interior blue wiith white dash and door panels and the 2 tone vinyl seat. already got it picked out in the lmc catalog as i have an origonal bench with good cushion so just buyin the vinyl cover to replace the origonal makes the best sense to me. i want an origonalish look. i want my truck to look like this without the white stripped moulding on the sides, torque thrust 2's full polished in 17x8 front and 17x9.5 rear and not quite as low. though ive also thought of going with 16in steel wheels with hubcaps like this one and of coarse the big white walls.
You don't like the 60-63 cabs!! I think they are the best!! The 64-66 are too modern!! They all look good, just joking with you!!
yes, i like how they both look. the whitewalls and hubcaps look more classic but the thrust 2's would give it a more muscle look. idk, ill make up my mind when it comes time to order the wheels. right now i want to do the anti-rust mod. lol. swap the cabs so i dont got all that rust anymore. i dont drive it cause i dont feel safe in it as bad as the cab is now. heres pics of my truck as is including all the rust. lol http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/williamb82/my_64_c10/
im a young guy. im only 26. i like the modern look of the cab. serisouly, something about that wrap around windshield just doesnt look right to me. i like it on older trucks but this style i dont. just like i donmt liek the stepside ver of this model. doesnt look right to me. the step side doesnt fit the big squarness of the cab and front end in my opion, but the 40's and 50's models look awesome stepside. id love to get an older one one day but for now this is what i got.
pretty rusty is an understatment. there is almost no metal joining the top of the windshield to the roof. lol. it was filled in with great stuff foam and then bondod over. i got the truck for a good deal so wasnt worried about it. i had planned to replace the cab when buying it. just wasnt expectin it to end up this bad. the bondo just fell off one day and i was like wtf. lol. plus every bump you hit rust falls on your head from the roof and on your legs from the dash. lol
ok, went and saw the other truck today. has a straight 6 thats locked up and 3 speed manual trans. its pretty origona. is this floor too bad to fix? and what about the surface rust and rust bubbles? should i hold out for a better cab? http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/williamb82/66chevy/
this cab looks better than the orginal one i looked at. But not too bad for a 40plus old truck. if it just surface rust thats not so bad the only way to know how much rust is to have it media blasted. The floor can be fixed theres a lot of repro sheet metal available . Im sure theres better cabs out there. its all in how much $$$ and labor you want to put out huh. what is that light blue color?? God shes gorgus. KIlroy was here!!! free snow for the taking
dont remember what its called but its an origonal chevy color. my uncle has the paint code somewhere. and yeah, the cab is way better shape then mine, just the floor is shot. for now i think ill have to cut the bad rust off and patch it with normal sheet metal till i can affor the entire floor kit if i decide to get this truck. and ill likely just primer it and leave it primered till its all fixed before painting it. its solid just about everywhere. i banged on everything. plus im hopin someone will want the rollin chasis so i can make some of the money back. its an all origonal rolling chasis. origonal engine, trans, brakes, rearend, etc... on the frame. its a 66 model. would anyone here be interested in it? wouldnt cost much. i dont want to scrap it as these trucks are hard enough to find as is.
williamb82 check out the pics of my kustom 66 are those the tires you like? i know you say your young, but that doesnt mean you cant love the TRUE hot rod look of a rap around window. the older the better.
I would like those headers if you get it and want to sell them! What is the floor like in your current cab? Maybe you could use some of the floor from it if it is good.
ok. ill keep you posted. as for the floor in my current cab parts of it are better but the section near the doors is shot just the same. lol
The rust that will probably cause you grief is the area around the roof lip on the outside, the area over the door inside and the cowl area and seams on the cowl. You will have to be the judge of whether you think it is something that you can repair correctly(or patch) and be happy with it. IMHO, I would say keep looking for a better cab, BC the floor is simple to repair but the roof ,on the other hand, can be a whole different story...
