[updated:LAST EDITED ON May-17-05 AT 01:37 PM (CST)]Hey, Thanks but the felts I am talking about are 2 pieces, 1 on the inside and 1 on the outside of the door that go on both sides at the bottom at the opening / had no problem wth the division bar felts they are refering to Thanks, Paul:
If you repainted your doors you may have closed up the holes a little with extra layers of primer and paint. You could try reaming the holes a little larger to fit the new parts.
Those are the two strips that have a little curve at one end and one goes on either side of the glass right?? Called "beaded window seals"... If we're talking about the same thing, they're a real pain in the ass to install. I had a bear of a time and ended up getting them in place but had to mess them up to do it. Basically I got them in place but had to use a flat screwdriver to pry the little rivits in place. Not all of them took. And I messed the felt a bit to do it. I basically don't look at them when I get in and out of the truck because it'd annoy me. So I guess although I'm not being much help and answering your "how-to" question, know that you're not alone in your frustration bro'! Larry Bear 56 Stepside - Daily driver Carlisle, MA
I feel your pain. Had the same problem-- the spacing of the protrusions on the beaded felt bars is inconsistent. Some of the protrusions line up with the holes-- some don't. I used a cutting wheel on a Dremel too to trim the offending protrusions. Beaded felt bars are nice and straight in the window opening now!
I have a restoration shop and this problem exists with every reproduction felt strip we've tried. We get our beaded felt strips in 8' lengths and bend the curve in them ourselves, then use a bead of 3M windshield urethane sealer to hold them in place. This is the stuff that holds windshields in place on new cars and is so tough it has to be cut out with a special wire. Run a strip of masking tape where the bead touches the door to keep any squished out off the paint and carefully trim with a razor blade. Install both the inner and outer and have an assistant hold them while you wedge something between them to hold them tightly in place. In 24 hours they will be set enough to roll window up and in a week King Kong couldn't pull them off plus the felt is still pristine. Since you already have the strips you can remove the factory ##### and still do the above. Good luck.
Tried your method today and it was easy and solved my problem without destroying the strips. Thanks a bunch for passing on your experience.
