Hello, i don't understand my truck. (1946 Chev, 216 with 4-speed manual) Follow fact: I rebuild the tranny with all bearings and today i have start the engine (was very easy, gasoline and go )and the engine makes the same noises as before. It's very quiet if i press the clutch if not i have the noise???? What's that? the clutch? Thanks for help. Volker
It sounds like clutch judder to me. How are your motor mounts front and rear? What is the condition of the clutch release bearing, throwout fork, clutch pressure plate and clutch disc? Is there a clutch return spring installed? Andy
clutch noises Hi Andy, the motor mounts are new, the bearing and the fork also new. pressure plate and disc in original condition. It's possible the disc is it? What do you mean with return spring?. a spring on the pedal? Volker
Volker, The brake pedal has a return spring that attaches with an extension to a bracket on the frame forward of the brake pedal. That bracket also has a place that a clutch return spring attaches to. The clutch return spring hooks onto the throwout fork adjusting rod and onto the bracket on the frame. I know I have seen a picture of it somewhere, but I cannot remember wher it is right now. I have consulted both the shop manual and the assembly manual but cannot find it. To see if it is the lack of return spring that is giving you problems, run the engine and pull up on the clutch pedal. If your noise goes away when pulling UP on the clutch pedal, your problem is that you have no return spring which will cause the throwout bearing to ride on the clutch disc all the time. I will try to find the picture and post it soon. Andy
