There are several of the same type of issues that you should go back and read from archives. There have been quite a number of folks that have already experimented with this idea.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Feb-02-06 AT 03:39 PM (CST)]Seems to me I read an article where someone purchased a new 67 cougar/mustang fuel tank and installed it in a 55-59 Chevy Truck. I can't find the article on the web anymore but I saved the picture. See attached if the atachment doesn't work email me for the photo. Now this tank is a little wide but with some trimming modification and welding in angle iron to support it looked pretty good. It also has a top fill which works well for bed fill access. I am not am expert just passing on info I read. My be worth checking into.

I put a Mustang gas tank in my 55 1 series truck. Looked exactly like MCARREL has posted. An "E" bay purchase ,new, for about $120.00
If I remember correctly it was a 16 gallon tank. Bob

The tank in the picture is mine. It is a tank that is listed for the Mustang. 16 gallons, with drain plug. As seen it is mounted in a 1950 1/2 ton truck. I used a short piece of fuel filler hose to mount a Torino vented gas cap. The whole setup is mounted at the rear, between the frame rails, using 1 inch square stock. I welded the corners, and drilled and bolted the tank to the 1 inch frame I made. Works great, and was cheap. Here's the drawbacks: The bedfill works good, but you do tend to drip fuel onto the bed wood. The other issue is that Ford uses different ohms for the fuel guage. This is not a huge problem if you use aftermarket guages, but is not good if you want to keep the stock guages. Other than that, it is an easy project. If money is not an issue, I would recommend a custom aluminum tank, due to the fact they bolt in and the fuel sender works with no modifications. Hope that helps....Mike

Thanks for the great info good to get the scoop right from the horses mouth. I think I am going to go this route. The $$$$ do get to be an issue as you know in one of these projects.
