It leaks where the dip stick enters the tube , or where the tube enters the block ? .

What kinda tranny do you want the install and why ? the top gear ratio will be the same @ 1 : 1.00 .

If you just want to get an open driveshaft , get the tranny out of a '54 or newer truck and it'll have the different rear cover with seal and exposed U-Joint yoke .

Must be a really early '54 to have a closed driveshaft (called a " Torque Tube BTW) . most '54s came with 3:90 final drive ratios in any case so simply adding the correct size 16" tires should have you ready to work...

I work the living snot out of my '49 with Torque Tube , I have LT215/85R16 (IIRC) tires on it , D rated , the correct size in a radial tire is a bit tricky and sometimes must be ordered but will work well . if you look in the archives under " tires" or " radial tires " you'll find the correct size .

If the dipstick tube is leaking , then it'll be wobbly if you grab it with your hand ~ if so , place a block of wood against it and whack it once with a hammer to drive it into the block , it's a friction fit .

DO NOT do this if you cannot wiggle it by hand ! .

If it's not loose , it's NOT LEAKING

DO NOT smack the living crap out of it and either bend it or drive it too far into the block ! .

    Nate,

All 3100 54's had torque tubes and 390 rear gears. The 5.1 was the first open drive line (Hutchins Drive?) and some early 55.1's (ask Andy) still came with torque tubes.

I vote for keeping the torque tube and setting up the rear end with 355's.

If you do remove the rear end of that closed sm420, i will gladly trade all of the open drive parts for your closed drive parts for your to switch over.

I'm always loking for a closed spare set-up.

    Jim

Jim, I have a '50 GMC that's a donor vehicle for the one I'm building, so when I finish with what I need, I'll try and keep you in mind. If the parts are compatible for you.

The rear springs will be different also between the torque tube and the open driveshaft rear ends. The open has the rear end locating pin pretty much dead center in the springs where the torque tube springs have a shorter front segment than the rear segment.
