Got the tail lights mounted and harness all the way to the lights when I realized I didn't know what to do with this problem. I have a dual filament bulb in the taillights, hence two wires coming from the lights. However, THREE wires from the harness go to each light, one each for tail lights, stop lights, and turn signals. How do I wire it up??? Andy
I just did turn signals with the switch from CP. I had a turn signal switch without directions (and unfinished) so I got the one from here with instructions. The flasher has to be wired up first. Try running a line to the light hooking it to any signal wire that you know is not the flasher. I can send you a scan of the instructions I got from here but with 12 wires I doubt they would work. Maybe you can find the instructions on the internet from the manfacturer.
Rear light. Andy, the web site Ken sent last night (great site Ken!) has the wiring diagram for a suburban. It should be pretty much the same. Its under miscelaneous docs, directional signals, attachment 12. Wish I had it when I was doing mine Are you using the original or a CP harnes? What are the colors or the numbers on the wires your working with?
Yeah, that document doesn't really help me out. It doesn't tell me what to do with the stop lamp and tail lamp wires. Maybe I need to study it a little more. Just looking for an answer as to which filament of the bulb the stop wire, signal wire and tail lamp wire goes and how to do it. Andy
Andy, The turn signal and stop light go to the same, I think the larger element in the bulb (brighter side). The tail light goes to the lower element side. I don't know if there is something to limit the back flow of current between the turn signal and stop light side. I put double element bulbs in my parking lights for the turn signals. I hope this helps. Good Luck! Howard
Tail lights Andy, when I did the wiring we played around with it and eventually figured it didn't mater what filament you hooked up to. Both turn out to be relatively the same. (at least on a 6V system). The tricky part comes on how the brake light and turn signal interact. On the front signals the flasher just tells them to flash on. On the back signals if the brakes are not depresed it does the same thing. If the brakes are down and the brake lights lit then the flasher switches the brake lite off then on so it acts as the turn signal. (I'm asuming yours is like mine and the brake lite and turn signal are one and the same) If you have separate brake light and turn signal it should be identical to the front lights.
Got it!!! Turns out that late night wiring on an empty stomach isn't such a good thing. I misread the instructions that came with the harness. After reading again it wired right up with no problems. All works as it should, tail, stop and signals. After doing this job I have to say that the inexpensive harness (made in the U.S.A.) worked absolutely perfectly, with all wires color coded as original. The fit was perfect all around, instructions clear and every single circuit works exactly as it should. Andy
Wiring For The Panel Andy, Where did you get that USA built harness from? I'm looking for one for the Panel that has original colors and lengths.
