So, a friend of mine has a '77 GMC. His latest problem is that he went to start the truck this morning, stuck the key in the ignition and the key turns 360* with no resistance. I'm thinking its the lock cylinder, but since I've never taken one apart I figured I'd ask you folks what you think about it. And whatever the problem is how do we get it fixed? Thanks in advance! Andy
Most likely is the ignition but it could also be the tumbler the ignition switches. start with trying a new key/ignition assembly. you will need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off easily, you will than need to remove the wheel lock ring. you will need a release tool for that to depress it and remove the lock ring/snap ring. you than need to remove the 3 screws for the turn signal unit and remove the hazard switch and the turn signal arm itself. pull that out and there should be 1 screw to remove the lock/ignition. if you replace that and it still turns freely. than replace the tumbler behind the ignition.
