My question is this: What kind of modifications will I run into when I put my 700r4 trans in my truck. Will the cab firewall have to be cut? Will the rear motor cross member have to be taken out?
Think this largely depends on if your truck is going to remain with the stock engine or if you are on your way to something like a V-8 conversion... I know with most V-8 conversions the 700R-4 necessitates cutting of the floor, right where the toeboard and floorboard meet. Kind of a hump needs to be there. You can see an example of this on most of the "Street-Rod Floor Kits" available at most places (including the host site). I did a custom floor, but the hump remains. It's small, maybe 1-2" high and goes about 6" across. Necessary to clear the bellhousing. I'm unsure if the stock engine would need a hump, I'm thinking the V-8 ends up sitting a little higher in the truck causing the need for the cut/hump. The crossmemeber will have to be changed. Our host site sells a universal one that works quite well. Basically bolt it to the transmission then bolt it in place to the frame and you are set. (Well, maybe its not quite that easy...) Not sure if you are still using the torque-tube drivetrain...obviously that would have to be changed too. Course you didn't ask about that so I'll stop there! Andy
Thanks Guys, That's pretty much what I expected. I have the cross member from cp and I am running a 63 model 230 6 cyl. I have already put in my new rearend. I didn't know that they made a street rod floor, I will have to look that up. I bolted the motor to the trans and tried a test fit and the cross member will have to go and the floor will have to be cut. Thanks Rick
The size and shape of the "hump" will depend on where you position your engine. I have mine far enough back to keep the fan from hitting the rad. but not so far back to need firewall fab.
