It all depends on what you want. First thing I would do (now that I know better) is to plan what you want you truck to be.

If you're going to be driving it, I'd start with the important stuff:
    1. Brakes
    2. Steering
    3. Engine
    4. Trans/Driveline
Then move on to stuff like getting the seat recovered, stereo, suspension mods, paint, etc.

If you have another vehicle and this is just a project, you can start tearing it down and do a frame up restore and replace/modify stuff as you build it.

yeah, this is a project truck. I was thinking about just stripping everything out and replace what I can and the motor will be the last thing to do. Are u doing the wiring urself? Cause I also have a 78 fleetside I taking parts off are they interchangable?

yes i believe that most of the parts are interchangeable if not all of them. yes i am doing the wiring my self this kit that i bought is suppose to be the easist kit to install but from the looks of it i think they might be lieing a little bit. but it is going to be worth the money i am removing the factory 12 cir. harness and installing a 18 cir. this is just in case i go with power seats, locks and windows and many other options.

    thanks shawn

Most all the body parts will work for those years . The 76 would be less on the fuse box and have AMPS gauge if it has full gauges. The 78 would be VOLTS Gauges if full gauges so the wiring would be different between the too. So if your using the cluster from one of them, you will have to pick witch way you are wiring it for that part.
    I hope this helps

    suggestion

I'm a former bodyman and one of the things I and many bodymen hate is redoing paint or body work after a good paint job has been put on a nice rig start with the drive train interior audio video etc, then go out word, there's nothing worse than chipped paint example reinstalling hood or kneeing a fender
A good way to go is bottom, axels spring bushings etc up, tranz engine, headers inside out ,you'll get the idea,
    have fun most of all
