What's involved in installing an oil filter in a 53 chevy pickup? It does not have one and I need to install one. Thanks Bill PS. You guy's have an awesome forum here !!! I use it all it time.
It's Easy : You go on FleaBay or junkyard or find an old takeout engine with one and ; Remove/purchase it COMPLETE with mounting brackets , U-Bolts , & hardware and both hoses and all the little brass fittings where the hoses connect to the block , if you buy a used one , buy new hoses they're cheap , or if you're poor , cut off the crimped ferrules and slide off the dead hose bits to reveal standard hose barbs , get hew oil resistant hose (it's different than fuel hose) and a couple clamps , mount up the filter then measure cut and install the new hoses . There is a message in here some where with a copy of the original installation sheet for you to follow . N.O.S. ones are al over FleayBay so wait for one to suit a pre 1963 Chevy 6 cylinder..... Remember : do notR] buy one with out the two U-Bolts and bracket ! you can punt on the hoses & fittings but the brackets that attach it to the intake manifold are special and not available...
Link to oil canister info Here's a good link to installing oil canisters on chevys. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/miscellaneous/oilcanister.htm Here's a picture of the one on my 235.
There Ya Go ! See now ? just like I said so print that out and keep it in your folder until you find one and get it ready to install... BTW : the heading on that page is wrong ~ it should read through 1962 .
Is mine in the wrong place My oil filter is mounted on the fender wall is that the wrong spot for it?
Yes And No : It's on the firewall of my '49 , GM make the kits for cabovers too so I guess mine was one of those grabbed off the shelf when it was installed at the dealer ~ . Some folks who don't know how it was back in the day , will insist the _only_ way , is to be just like the pictures in the acessory manual but in fact there was quite a bit of wiggle room . if it works O.K. and you like it , leave it be and rest easy knowing you know more than the ignorant blabbermouth who's knocking your truck ~ he prolly doesn't have as nice a one as you do...
You've got one of those Big Kahuna filters! That's a lot bigger than the cannister on mine. You've got one of the bigger ones that holds around 2 1/2 quarts. I've never seen how (or where) they were originally installed. I'm with Nate, though. If it works and you're happy with it, then so be it! The bracket holding yours on doesn't look homemade, so I'm thinking it might be how that kind might have been installed. I'd love to see more pictures of it.
Filter Thanks, looks fairly simple, again, thank you guys. Am used to working on 60's muscle cars, have a 66 Nova, but love working on this ole truck. Bill
