the restoration is near finish and the windshield frame is on the way to Germany. Now i'm looking for an old horn. I think it must be a horn with the old sound from the 30's (i can't describe the sound ). Have anyone an idea where can i buy? (6 or 12 Volts are equal. If it's a 6 Volt i have a 12 to 6 Volt converter with 20 amps inside the truck) Volker
Volker, old horns show up on e-bay all the time. There's a 6V one there now for sale. Just type in "chevy truck, 50, horn". It looks like with a little paint, this one would be perfect for a 40's truck!
Also, you do not need a converter when running a 6 volt horn on 12 volts. Just don't lean on it for too long. My 6V horn is working fine on 12V. when you get your horn, if it doesn't work, there are plenty of posts in the archives on how to adjust and repair them. Andy
Vintage Horns Congradulations on all the hard work Volker ! . You'll find these horns were used for many years on forklifts . Carefully open the back and file the points clean , then adjust using a test light to where the light barely lights , hold the adjuster from moving as you snug up the locknut , test toot it whilst firmly clmaped in a vise ~ if the horn is not solidly mounted , it won't toot correctly and cannot possibly be adjusted . Once it's tooting , adjust for the loudest sound . That's it ! . 6 volt horns will not be damaged by 12 volts unless you toot it for a long time
